I'm currently in NHS, FHS, and BHS. The only other honor society in my school that would apply to me is science honor society, which I am eligible for. I'm just wondering if it would even be worth my time to apply, as I'm already in a few honor societies and other ECs. Would it even make a difference to a college if I was also in SHS? For the record, I'm applying to some pretty elite schools.

No, don’t make a “laundry list” of activities for yourself.

Better yet, don’t think about ECs as something that will get you into X college. That’s not what they’re for. So to my last post, if you are interested in science, go ahead and join. Have FUN and make some friends with similar interests. If you could care less, then don’t join. Simple.

Unless you plan on doing something important with it, then no.

Honor societies are not viewed as significant ECs. They are, after all, just a reflection of your academic grades which are already evident. If you have made significant community contributions through the honor society activities, those are worth mentioning. However joining one more society will only look like resume-padding.

I agree with fauve. In fact, I would go a step further and suggest you shouldn’t even list all 3 groups you have already joined – it just makes you look like a compulsive joiner rather than a doer who has learned to prioritize. My son never bothered to fill out his NHS application because he didn’t have any time to spare after fulfilling his other obligations and didn’t see the point. That “missing honor” didn’t stop him from getting 4 elite-college acceptances.

That’s what I thought. Thanks for your responses!
