I was wondering if anyone here has crossed OU off their list because of the whole SAE fraternity incident?
IDK about National Merit, but what about a National Achievement Finalist/Scholar? If I was a African American male (which I’m not, I’m just a white kid), especially if I was interested in Greek life, that might turn me off from going there or at least make me feel uncomfortable about doing so.
Does OU extend the same or similar scholarships to National Achievement Scholars? Many Universities don’t but maybe OU should start if they don’t already.
Coach Lombardi had this right " Adversity does not build character, it reveals it"
If OU’s (or more specifically President Boren’s) response had been anything short of perfect, this disgusting event could have really been a setback. Instead, after hearing the commitment of the student body and the administration to face the challenges of ignorance and racism rather than turning a blind eye to them, I believe many NM scholars would want to be part of a place that strives to better itself.
President Boren set the bar high:
“We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue.”
Will America’s best and brightest students answer the call and make this happen? I think they will.
Who can predict what will sway a 17 to 18 year old? If food, dorms or weather are factors, then this would be too.
But surely they have seen that this issue is not limited to OU. Almost every news story I have seen has touched on racism in Greek life at multiple campuses and multiple frats. Other campuses have been in the news for their treatment of sexual assault. One story I saw touched on Alabama’s sororities and racism. There was mention on CC of a large number of students overdosing at one LAC in the northeast. No campus is immune to trouble.
National Achievement Finalists get a full ride offer, and I’m glad my sons didn’t consider them.
@onceuponamom Because of this?
Tell me white fraternity students at Ivy League schools don’t have racists or misogynists?

And FYI every school that we looked at and sent us literature for full tuition and other scholarships offered the same for NMF and NAF. As far as I know there isn’t a university that offers one and not the other?
According to onceuponamom OU offers a better scholarship for NAF than to NMF, although the NMF package is very good, OU was very upfront in pointing out it is not a “full ride” I guess different colleges can set up their scholarship for NMF and NAF differently. I couldn’t find anything about NAF on OU’s web page.
Last year, OU offered my son a full ride and other perks for his National Merit award. He didn’t even want to consider the school or read the paperwork that had been sent in. Why? He didn’t think he would blend into a school in the “south”.
@Aunt bea you made me smile! D is concerned about going to OU because it is so far NORTH! We had to buy an ice scraper for the car and a coat for her and boots for me when we visited. We are going to have to buy her new clothes to make it through a winter there. She is excited about the ice and snow but we are going to have to invest more in warm clothes and need to research what we need to do winterize her car.
I’m going to contact the scholars office and find out why other are being offered “full rides” for NMF and NAF when they specifically told us that their NM package was NOT a full ride. Did they offer your son more than they list as the official NMF package on their web site?
@3scouts, they constantly called, wrote, texted, and emailed him. He would get special housing, full tuition, room and board and I think, books. We’re from Southern California, and I’m told they really want the California kids, because we are all “year-round” athletes. Son is a swimmer, surfer, and tennis player. He’s at his first choice school-Caltech. That’s why we pay the big bucks!
If OU had offered me a full ride, I might have considered them. But the housing tab was just too much. I went for a smaller, lower ranked college, but WSU will give me a full ride. (It’s shorter, only 4 years, but I have enough transfer credits to make it work.)
hmm… maybe they were adding to the NMF package because your son is an athlete? At least Cal Tech is instate for you!
Caltech is private and full fee for us!!! So that check from national merit knocks off $2500 per year. Drop in the bucket.
@aunt bea…If the $2500 you’re referring to is the official NM scholarship, it is a one-time $2500, not a renewable or 4 year like the school sponsored awards are.
From other posts, it looks like @auntbea is referring to a Corporate-sponsored award that is $2500 per year.

Cal Tech is a private univ. Nearly all privates charge the same tuition rate to everyone. Being instate is meaningless.
Yes @mom2collegekids I stand corrected Aunt bea pointed this out up thread (post #15) I’m not very knowledgeable on west coast school or colleges in general but I’m learning more every day thanks to CC!
