Does anyone know if Maryland would cancel Admitted students day…the forecast is predicting 7 inches of snow Thursday, but you know how the weathermen are. We are driving from out of state on Thursday for the Preview Program Engineering program and don’t know if they are going to still have it…I called today but they said they were going to talk about it today.
I live about an hour away from UMD. Right now the local Friday forecast is 30 degrees and mostly sunny, but it really all depends on what actually happens Thursday
what are you hearing about the forecast for Thursday. In NJ it shows possible 7 inches. Can you let me know how the roads are when it snows. Do they do a good job or does the town come to a stand still?
@collegenj see @ApplyMaryland on Twitter:
.@MsJCricket We’re watching the weather closely & will communicate to guests via email about ASOH status by Wed. evening. Stay tuned…
Wondering here in Boston, too. We’re (hopefully) flying out on Thursday afternoon for the admitted students day on Friday. Do you think it will be a last minute decision?
@hippobirdy thank you for the site info. Now I guess its a wait and see.
@tedysmom We are planning on flying in from Boston as well on Thursday afternoon - will be a shame if the Open house is cancelled.
@takanuva and others coming from the north. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this uncertainty, but weather around here is highly unpredictable. Sometimes storms essentially split as they cross the mountains, for example, and go north and south of DC.
At the same time, however, you should remember that with respect to weather, DC is really a southern town. It does not take much snow at all to shut it down. The colleges don’t close as much as the K-12 schools, and UMCP seems to close less often than a lot of other area colleges, but 7" of snow would be a lot for this area to handle.
Thanks @ Arimom2 Will watch out for updates.
I do not mind winter but seriously this time I am sooo done with snow
We’re going to get 6-8" and it’s supposed to end early afternoon. I think the Thursday night Engineering event will be in trouble, but the early afternoon end with good weather Friday hopefully will allow them to hold the Admitted Students event. If they don’t cancel the Engineering event, for those driving on the East Coast, I’d highly suggest leaving this evening – the roads shouldn’t start getting bad until 2-3 AM.
For those flying in Thursday afternoon, you may be delayed in arriving due to other delays/cancellations from the morning schedule and when you get here there could be some gridlock getting to College Park – it depends on what airport you’re flying into. BWI – traffic on I-95 and MD-295 will be slow. Dulles – ugh bad on I-495. DCA – don’t even get a rental car, ride the Metro to College Park and then get a taxi.
I received a response to an email I sent regarding the Engineering program on Thursday and it said they will be sending out another email later today since it might be cancelled. So keep an eye out for it.
UMD is officially closed tomorrow. They sent an email out about 2:20 this afternoon. I work at UMD and have a daughter attending next year.
So there’s no word yet about Friday?
All Thursday night programs cancelled, including overnight program and Engineering Preview Program. No word yet on Friday – the website says if there is a closure or even a delay on Friday that the Accepted Students event will be cancelled.
I just called them. They will likely make a decision BY tommorow night whether to open on time Fri. Most people flying in have to fly in tommorow afternoon/evening. If WE cancel and UMD doesn’t, WE lose out. If WE don’t cancel and UMD does, then too WE lose out!! People flying in can not make a decision AFTER UMD has decided one way or another, unless they were flying in Friday morning or unless UMD decides tonight about Friday (which they likely can’t).
There goes that…
I was really looking forward to going to the Engineering preview program. The hotel we are staying in has passed the cancellation time so I am really hoping the weathermen are wrong and its nothing so the admitted student day goes on…I can’t make it for the other days. Do you think if they cancel the admitted students day we could still get a detailed tour for University Honors and Engineering anyway…I already did a regular tour session.
Unfortunately, weather predictions in the DC area can be quite unreliable. I’ve lived in this area for more years than I care to count and sometimes the snow predictions are way off. But still UMD must err on the side of safety for both students and visitors. The roads can really be difficult and many people here just do not know how to drive in the snow. If you end up here anyway, there is a chance of a big snowball fight on the UMD mall
Admitted student day for March 6 has been cancelled

tks for the update…I am so glad we decided not to go…the roads here were not good and my parents and I would have been very upset to travel in the bad weather only to find out it was cancelled…and even though the hotel said we had to cancel by yesterday…they let us cancel with out penalty…already tried to reschedule for next event but 4/10 was the only option…I have to try and see if I can get out of a tournament now…some hotels are already sold out…I hope the people that were flying by plane were able to reschedule.
correction…they must have opened 4/3 again because I didn’t have the option earlier before they cancelled it and now its open.
