Will studying abroad sophomore year be a problem?

I wasn't sure if I'd get answers in the business forum so I decided it'd be more relevant to ask my question here.

I've been accepted to study abroad in Beijing for spring of my sophomore year. I plan to major in finance or accounting, most likely accounting. The thought never really came to me until yesterday, but will studying abroad during my sophomore year affect my chances of finding an internship for that summer? I know I will have to push off some of my required classes such as Accounting II for fall of Junior year. By doing so, does this eliminate my chances of finding an internship? Thanks.

bump…

How many credits will you get for studying abroad? Is there any chance you can take courses over this summer?

Yes, it will hurt your chances because you will not be as accessible to recruiters in the U.S.

I will get 15 credits for studying abroad and I can’t take courses because I am going to Taiwan for a summer language program as well.

Then what can I do to prepare myself and not limit myself as much as possible?

Probably the best thing you can do is to try to send out some resumesduring the late summer and hope that someone gets interested enough to interview you early. You are going to be in tough shape from an interview standpoint, being out of the country. maybe you can see if there are any employers who have china offices and you can interview and/or work there.

The abroad handicap is the reason why UM Ross does not allow their BBAs to study abroad. Some places make a point to offer early interview consideration if you let them know you’re going abroad, but those are not a majority. What you’re going to need to do is network with recruiters and try to politely persuade them to accommodate you, as most internship recruiting occurs second semester. Your only a sophomore, so that’s a handicap in itself.
