Will Taking An Independent Study Stregthen Your Transcript?

Hi,
So I am a sophomore and I a little disappointed with my 10th grade schedule. My school does not offer a lot of honors classes, so there are no advanced courses offered in the subjects I do particularly well in, like Latin, English, history(the humanities, basically). The only advanced courses offered to my grade level are AP Physics, for those that did well in physics from freshman year and math at the honors level. Unfortunatley, math and science happened to be my weakest last year as a freshman, so there were not any AP's or honors courses offered to me this year. I have a unique background, which contributed to my not doing so well in math and science freshman year, so I can easily explain that to colleges, but I really want to make my 10th grade schedule as strong as possible. So, since I am really strong in Latin, I was thinking to do an Independent in it this year. I am only in second year Latin (Latin 2) but I have a strong A in the class so would I was thinking to take Latin 2 and also do an independent study in Latin 3. If I did that, I would be able to take AP Latin Vergil in my junior year and AP Latin Literature in my senior year. Oh and I forgot to mention, I take two languages: Latin and Spanish. So, would taking the Independent Study in Latin 3 in addition to all my other courses boost me up a bit, or would that not even really help at all?

I'd appreciate what you guys think. Feel free to PM me and I can share more about my course load and stuff.

Thanks a million in advance.

In my school Latin 3/4 is AP Latin. If it isn' this way at your school I don't suggest it. Latin 3 will probably require Latin 2. Plus, there is the passive/active voice, more subjunctives, etc. For AP Latin you should be very skilled at not only translating Latin ,but inderstand how the stanzas fit together. If you need help in AP Latin. get an English Translation of Metamorphoses and read it, so you can understand what is happening in english before you look at the Latin syntax.

You can't take latin 2 and 3 at the same time. That just wouldn't work.

Yeah, languages are sequential until you master all the grammar and some vocabulary. Then you just take which ever spanish classes you want in the college courses.

Thanks for the imput, guys. I spoke with my Latin teacher today and he recommends just taking an acceleration program over the summer, which would cover Latin 3 and next year I could take AP so I guess I'll just do that.
