Will the a cheating referral affect my chances of getting into some colleges?

I am a sophomore and I got a cheating referral because I looked at my notes during an oral Spanish exam. The teacher saw me but did nothing. The next day the Admin called me up and gave me a referral and I have to serve 2 detentions. I really do regret what I did now because it will affect the clubs that I might be able to get in (Beta, Honor Society, etc) that requires you to have a clean record. My biggest concern is that it will affect my future. Will this referral be on my transcript forever for colleges to see because I really don’t want that referral to represent who I am that I am a cheater. That was a wrongdoing and I don’t know what I was thinking. I’ve never done anything like that before. So now should I go talk to the GC to see what I can do from now on? Can the GC waive the referral if I remain a good student and never do that again? And most of all, what should I do when I apply to college having this on my record?

I would do your detentions and go to the GC and say that what you did was unexcusable.
Why did you cheat? Were you not prepared?
If that is the case, tell your GC you looked because you were not prepared and in the future if you get behind you will talk to your teacher/drop an extracurricular/etc.

Then ask what information, if any, is passed on to colleges regarding this matter?
