Will these engineering colleges consider me

How’s that?

That certainly demonstrates the way U Mich calculates HS GPA. However, I doubt that many other schools use that method, and, for that matter, if U Mich really does either. If two students apply to UMich from the same HS, one is straight A, and the other is straight A-, I’d be very surprised if, all other things being equal, the A student didn’t have a better shot than the A- student.

Also, the common app requests grades with + and -

And does it matter if I had 1 C in AP Biology but a A in AP Physics. Like will they care even though its not my intended major. Ik Michigan is a huge reach but what about the other colleges

In the UMich specific context, the link @knowstuff provided for UMich has some very good info on that.

“We do not use a weighted GPA scale in our evaluation process. We will convert all students’ GPA to an unweighted 4.0 scale using all classes in 9th through 11th grades, and we use only the absolute value of the grade in the recalculation process (A+ or A or A- = 4.0). Additionally, we review the number of demanding courses separately, and during the holistic review process the rigor of the applicant’s curriculum is taken into consideration.”

So, when they review “the number of demanding courses separately” and “process the rigor of the applicant’s curriculum” they’ll see two AP’s, one with an A and one with a C. Will they average that and think this is a B student in rigorous course work, or will they say, this is a hard science/math/physics/CS applicant so we should care less about the AP Bio grade? Short of a UMich adcom weighing in, your guess is as good as anyone’s.

What about purdue. Do they take into account unweighted or weighted? Also I heard Purdue superscores. So would I just turn in a 35 in math or my composite score of 30?

@tdy123. You may call admissions and ask them. I already went through this with my son. That is how they calculate the grades. I believe the grades are recalculated before the reviewer sees them.

Most of the other schools we dealt with did it this way also. I am sure there are some that use different methods. When we were judging schools we also used this method also to give a bit of a cushion for schools that do do weighted scores. It’s what worked for us at the time.

Also grades is just one part of the application. Essays count more then people give them credit for.

If they calculate my unweighted, then theres no way i can get to any of these colleges. However, when I used my schools naviance account, people with almost the same stats got in. So im not sure whether every college just converts it.

Don’t rely on Naviance data, it pools all majors and hooked applicants together.

Purdue doesn’t specify if they look at UW or W GPA.

Call and ask the specific schools or email them. They will tell you or look at their website. From memory Purdue scores the same unweighted.

I mean if purdue super scores, how does it work. Do I submit just my math section with a 35 or my composite of 30.

Email them but you send in all your scores and they will take that they want. If applying for engineering or the like they really are looking at science and math mostly. My son visited Rose Hulman and when you signed in for the visit all they wanted was to know your GPA and your math and science scores. We found this was the jist at most colleges. Sure having a great composite is nice but you don’t want weak science and math scores for engineering either.

Yes, Purdue superscores. Most of the questions you need answered are right in their site.

Superscoring takes you best scores from each section across multiple test dates and combines them

If you took the ACT the first time and scored 28 29 35 33 = 31 composite and a second time scored 32 32 31 30 = 31 composite, you superscored would be 32 32 35 33 which is a 33 composite.

If you’ve only taken it once, superscoring isn’t relevant. It certainly doesn’t mean just your Math score.

Also, take advice here with a grain of salt.

“You need a stronger ACT (Both ENGLISH and MATH SECTIONs (especially, math) has to be exceptionally strong 33+)
Also, I would take 2 SAT 2 SUBJECTS (Math 2) and one science, to demonstrate you competency in STEM ( since your major is engineering”

My daughter had a rounded-up 31 ACT superscore, with a 30 Math, and no subject tests, and got into all 5 of the 7 schools you listed that she applied to (wasn’t interested in Mich or Ill.). With a 3.78 unweighted. She’s a happy sophomore MechE at Purdue (where she was accepted in November, 3 weeks after applying).
