I was wondering whether the fact that I'm from Germany will increase my chances of getting into a good college or help me at all. I moved here four years ago, and I'm fluent in German and English. I also took the German Sat Subject Test and got an 800. My counselor said it would look really good because I will stand out. Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you.

Getting an 800 on an SAT Subject Test for German as a foreign language when it’s your native language isn’t going to help you at all. A high score on such a test is expected. That’s like me taking an English-as-a-foreign-language exam. I’d suggest taking two other subject tests and submitting all three, as the German test won’t really be a satisfactory way to fill the subject test requirement at schools that have it.

However, being bilingual could help a bit. It really depends on what they’re looking for that year. I don’t think it’ll make a big impact either way unless you have to apply as an international applicant, in which case it would make it much harder to get in, especially if you’ll be applying for financial aid.

It helps a bit to differentiate you. There are lots of international applicants from India, China and Korea - not as many from Germany.

Curious as to why you wouldn’t return to school in Germany given how much less expensive it is? (Although I realize it’s an entirely different kind of educational experience.)

Sure it’ll help some. Schools want interesting applicants. if you write a compelling essay about some of the challenges that you faced, it could be very interesting. Immigrants are pretty cool. Make sure you add to the application good grades and ECs that you are passionate about. Best of luck!
