hey Amarie92, I’m profound deaf in both ears and I wear Cochlear Implant. I also have been accepted early action to MIT (Yes, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Wellesley, while being waitlisted from Upenn and Columbia. And I’m def MIT 2013! :D

So, no, I don’t think that would hurt your chances for top tier schools since being deaf might make us unique amongst all of the applicants to top tier schools.

Why would you think it’s a problem? What would make you think your deafness would hurt you in admissions? You can PM me if you want to for any questions or anything. :)

Why would it be a problem? Heck, it may even help you get into some schools. Good Luck!! :)

It is only a problem inasmuch as it may have limited your ability to earn top grades in HS. When you are applying to college, you will want to communicate with the disability services offices at each place. Find out what their experience is with students like you, and ask what kinds of accommodations will be available in the classroom.

Good luck!

Kudos to you for not letting this hold you back! I don’t see why it would ever hurt you. Life is handed to us on a silver platter and each and everyone of us are different. We all have something to we need to deal with and being 50% deaf is your ‘specialty’. Life is what we make of it and if you allow this to hold you back, it will. If you embrace it and keep moving forward…you will be amazed with yourself. Good luck to you and know you will soar!

Hey, I’m deaf myself (profoundly)! It’s a big disadvantage, but overcoming it is really awesome. :)

By the way, do you know sign language? A lot of people I’ve met can learn from me and maybe you can tell the adcom that you’ll teach others? Just a thought, as I have no idea how they view that.

My D is also 100% deaf in one ear and she is starting a double Major Major in Music Ed and Music Performance. Yes she has to work harder but she was accepted everywhere she applied and is now heading down to the States. Good Luck
