Will this hurt my chances at Columbia University

I have a 4.1 GPA however I am number 40/350 in my class which puts me , unfortunately, in the top 12% of my class. Will this work against me at Columbia University. I am taking the most rigourous courses my school offers. Thanks so much!

What's your UW GPA? It pretty much depends on what your majoring in, but it probably won't hurt you too much. Are you instate? It pretty much depends where you're coming from, being 12% in an NY, NJ, PA, MA school is certainly different than being top 12% in Iowa or Texas (no offense) Are you from a public or private school? I think you have a pretty decent chance, especially if you have high SAT scores and good essays and recs. If you really really want to go to Columbia, apply EA or ED (not sure which one they offer). Best of luck!

im top 12% in NJ! I have decent SATs 720 CR, 680 Math, 740 Writing, and want to major in History/Political science. Is top 12% good then? Thanks so much IHATESAT (interesting name lol)

Haha... Columbia, I think you will be fine for Columbia! I actually have a family friend who got into Columbia last yr, she is now a freshman there, and she was in the top 15 percent, I believe there were like 400 people in her class, and she came from NJ too (Near Rutgurs). She was really involved with swimming, but that was pretty much all. I actually know a few kids who got into cornell and other Ivy's who weren't in the top ten percent either. I believe her SAT scoes were actually about the same, she got a 1380.

mmm.. so what was her hook?

My friend was the creator of a Gay and Straight Alliance club, which did different ralleys and such.
