I currently have a 2100 on the sat (didnt study, studied for the next one im taking this saturday and will probably get around a 2200-2250 on that one)

740 math 690 cr 670 writing (ouch will definately improve)

I live in ny, have 4.0+ gpa, great recommendations, all ap classes. 800 bio sat II, 7 something on one of the math sat II

Also, participate in many clubs / activities. Notables: Part of New York state science olympiad team, won state medal in 1 event, 3 medals in regional event on long island.

What are my chances of making it into columbia with scores like these? Do i have any chance at all.

One of the things you face is that competition from NY is especially brutal, so if you have the same stats as someone from even another overrepresented state, they get the tip. Columbia has staff kids, legacies and many development kids from NY to accommodate and want representation from everywhere, without one of those hooks you need to have a very strong package.

I taught at Columbia from 1999-2007. I would say that MANY factors other than academic credentials were used in evaluating applications. In particular, I am sorry to say, high income background did sometimes help and having a parent who had attended Columbia helped significantly (related to future givings, common in many private schools).

hmom5, Columbia staff got almost zero preference in admission, so that is not going to be as much of an issue as legacy kids.

what could i do to improve my chances other than doing better on the sats. Am i sort of stuck until i apply b/c im not a legacy kid? Should i worry im not doing something?
