Will this really ruin my chances to a good college?

Im a sophmore in highschool and this quarter i may get my first c ever. I have all As and one high b in honors chemistry. I take one ap class. the c is in microbiology. My parents told me that this c will ruin your chancs of college. I want to know if this is true or not. I ended freshman year with a 4.0. Im not shooting only for ivy leagues. I like carnegie mellon, umd, emory, georg washington, and boston university. Im also in a academic program at school, Im in the do something club and latin honor society.

So will this one c make my chances drop drastically?

One C doesn’t hurt you that much. Keep most of your grades up and the colleges will chalk it up to bad luck.

One C is not going to matter.

Most schools will take your overall gpa, and your standardized test scores.

The colleges realize that kids are not robots.

I thought colleges only considered your semester grades?

This is going to sound harsh, but get over it. A single C may get another look at if it’s for the semester, but this is only a quarter grade, you can still get an A second quarter & bring it up to a B. Good luck with everything though.

Sent from my iPhone using CC

That’s difficult to judge disregarding the whole host of other factors though one C may cause slight disadvantage but certainly not enough to narrow the gates to emory and the like.

yea, it probably will

I would say no. As long as you are a good person thats all that rilly matters.

Depends what college. If the C persists onto the semester grade, it will definitely hurt your chances.

For what it’s worth, I remember this one student on CC a couple of years ago who was accepted to Dartmouth. He had a C in his Algebra II class during his sophomore year, as well as a number of B’s. That obviously didn’t stop Dartmouth from accepting him - he said that his acceptance was mostly due to the quality of his essays.

Think about it. The admissions officers at highly competitive schools will only get 15 minutes max. to read your app due to the sheer numbers of other applications. They will notice the C, but it won’t be the end of the world if you have a compelling story to tell in your essay.

Best wishes.
