<p>I never did essay prep for the SAT and I want to increase my writing score....so here it is: 1st essay in the 2nd edition blue book:</p>
<p>Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority? </p>
<p>Throughout history, authority has taken the reigns of society, controlling it in many different ways. In some instances, society fought back at this control because of unhappiness, impatience, and disagreement. The success of these conflicts have, however, had lasting impact on people today and show that question of authority is not only encouraged, but also imperative to the reaching of goals.
The earliest successful question of authority is the Magna Carta, in England, during the 1000s A.D. Noblemen decided to limit the kings relentless powers by forcing him to sign it. Never before had something like this occurred. Before this moment, anyone who did not follow the kings laws would be jailed or even put to the death. The Magna Carta served as a way to make the King of England meet not only his own demands, but also those of his people. This shows that while it took bravery and sacrifice to achieve the signing of the Magna Carta, in the end, the implications of it would be of great importance.
700 years later, the British colonies of America faced the challenge of non-represented taxation. What led to the American Revolution was an infant civilization with a cause for political justice. By not only questioning the King, but openly criticizing Britain and destroying British property (during the Boston tea party), American Whigs put themselves at the risk of treason. Still, the perseverance and the sense of unity brought the colonies up to win the Revolutionary War. This rebellion led to the founding of one of the most important countries today: The United States
180 years after the founding of the United States, segregation plagued the American South. Supporters of civil rights were faced with arrest, jailing, and, if an influential member of society, loss of credibility. Through the peaceful words of activists such as Martin Luther King Jr, however, blacks would finally be given their civil rights. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and Thoreaus peaceful rebellion tactics, Dr. King showed that the question of authority did not have to be violent but did require some sacrifice.
There will always be disagreement in the world, but from these disagreements, come some of the most important ideas and events to occur, as shown by history. While the common theme in rebellion is sacrifice to gain, it is evident that the gain is, historically, worth the sacrifice. </p>
<p>Please give any advice you have...I made a 630 on W on March SAT and I wanna bring it up to around 720-ish... :)</p>
