William and Mary Cheerleading?

I am currently a senior and will be applying to William and Mary this year. Does anyone know anything about cheerleading at William and Mary? (Are they good, do they compete, etc.)

i don’t think they compete… the coach’s email is listed on this page: www.tribeathletics.com (click staff directory) they also have a webpage but it looks kinda out of date

W&M has cheerleading but it’s not a varsity sport per se. They do cheer at home games but to my knowledge, they do not compete. It’s closer to a club sport in function but they are absolutely present at our athletic events and provide a great way to get involved.

Look us up on Facebook.com where information on our activities, events, and tryout information is posted! Search “William & Mary Tribe Cheerleading”

Cheerleading at W&M is a Varsity sport which entails benefits of the training room and travel. The squad cheers for football and basketball, as well as supporting our “buddy teams” throughout the year for SAAC points. Currently, our squad is All-Girl (6 stunt groups strong) with previous years being both All-Girl and Co-Ed. Tribe Cheer returned to the competition arena in spring 2010 in which we earned the “Grand Champions” trophy at the Colonial Spirit Championship. Other collegiate teams present included UVA and University of Mary Washington. Competition is an annual commitment that occurs at the end of basketball season.

We are persistently searching for new talent to join the strong program that our coaches (Todd and Gretchen) have created since they joined us in spring 2008. Annual Cheer Camp at UVA (in August), new uniforms, and new competition style mats are a few examples of their efforts in building the Tribe Cheerleading program.

Feel free to contact Todd Callan at wtcallan@wm.edu and Gretchen McConnell at ghmcco@email.wm.edu for more information.

Hope this information is helpful!
Lindsay, 3rd year Tribe Cheerleader

Lindsay, glad you were able to respond to this thread and provide some clarity.

Just to clarify what we posted when I said cheerleading isn’t a varsity sport. It’s not a recruited sport like soccer or football and to my knowledge, it’s not acknowledged by the NCAA as one of our 23 Division I sports for Title IX purposes and the like.

Yes, this is true! Unfortunately, no scholarships are available but we’re hoping in time this will change! :stuck_out_tongue: However, we are recognized as varsity athletes in the sense that we receive benefits of the sports medicine department, tutoring, earning a “Letter”, and eligibility for the Provost Awards (recognizing athletes who achieve academic excellence).

I just spoke with a friend of my S who is currently a W&M cheerleader. She told me that W&M cheer competes against other schools.
