We likely won’t make it unfortunately as we were there in Feb and live in WA. Thankfully we had a great visit. Wish we lived closer!
My son will be there!
Hey Ryan!
Congratulations and Welcome to the Tribe! W&M doesn’t actually allow students to declare their major until the 2nd semester of their Sophomore year so you have a little time to consider that.
We will be there also. My D so excited!
Here’s their directions with everything you need to know/do!
My DS and I will be there. OOS but son loved the campus after the first visit. 3.9xUW, 4.4W, 1570 SAT, meh ECs.
Does the financial aid offer come together with admission letter?
No. Ours came several (anxious) weeks later.
Hi Wm&Mary prospectives! This was a last minute add to my son’s list, and we are very out of state, but do love VA
I’m wondering if you all have any outstanding reasons for commiting to W&M? S22 would be a CS or math major. We love the reviews on student happiness and internship support. If you are leaning into the tribe, could you share what is the draw? Thanks so much!
DS also leaning toward WM as a CS major. He was accepted to some large tech schools and that was the original focus until we found WM. It was the small classes, mentorship of professors, and research ability as an undergrad that had us start to rethink the plan. My other child went to a big tech school, and it has been a very impersonal experience without professor support even as an extrovert. We are about 98% ready to commit to WM, but waiting until after admitted student day.
We are also OOS and leaning towards W&M for CS. W&M wasn’t an obvious candidate when making our DS’s list for CS schools but a friend of mine has a son currently a senior at W&M that raves about certain aspects of the school. The most important being the personal attention that he received from many of the professors. Our DS didn’t want to go to a small LAC since his high school is almost 2k kids and he was afraid of just replicating high school. W&M’s size and the supportive professors is a great mix.
Yes to everything you said.
DD also felt that everything clicked for her when we visited the campus. From the students she got to meet and talk to on the tour, to the feel and size of the campus.
She is more of an introvert that has few and quirky friends. Not into big sports or greek.
A good friends kid did a full-ride masters at W&M in biochem and had an incredible experience between research opportunities, professor mentorship, and teaching. Her daughter told her all the undergrads were so smart and impressive - tons of them go onto PhDs, the school has excellent placement. The daughter got into an incredible PhD program at UCLA.
A co-workers told me their son was a biology major there, was working in a lab by sophomore year (and the more research experience, the better for grad school), did an overseas research class one summer, a prestigious REU another summer, and an senior honors research project that was published. And then was accepted to 2 of the best PhD programs in the country. The co-worker compared the professional attention to their other child as a top SLAC.
There is a saying at William & Mary that “those who come here belong here”. Like you, William & Mary was a late addition to my S22’s list and didn’t seem like an obvious choice for a STEM kid.
As with the other posters, we were blown away by the research opportunities. Our tour guide was a chem major and told us that the professors love to get freshman involved in their research because they know they will have them onboard for four years. The students are routinely credited as co authors on academic publications.
My son decided to apply ED after his visit because in addition to the amazing academic opportunities, he loved the vibe and the sense of community at William & Mary. He also loved that the campus is bikeable and that they have a lake and recreation area on campus. We toured over a dozen campuses over the summer. After each tour, I would keep my opinions to myself and ask about his thoughts. His response after the William & Mary tour was, “this just feels right. I think I have found my home.” He is over the moon excited to be joining the Tribe.
My DS will be a physics major, so I haven’t done a deep dive into the CS program, but it appears that the school is prioritizing and growing the program. There is a new $72 million facility opening in 2024.
For those interested in CS or, somewhat in that world, Data Science, W&M recently announced a four-year strategic planning document called Vision 2026, with four pillars that they’re going to be investing in even more than they have. One of the four pillars is “Data”: Data | William & Mary
I’m not totally sure what the scope is on “Data” (are they thinking more like “we want humanities students to know how to run SQL queries”? or more like “we want to fund *research in AI”? or “more CS majors”? “a stronger pipeline to the tech industry”?), but it seems like the school is going to be investing even more resources in that area. If you’re going to be at the admitted students day, they might be able to flesh that out a bit.
