Just an FYI clarification, W&M has had lower admit rate and higher test scores than UVirginia for decades.

Might want to look at Holy Cross-very good school near Boston. Holy Cross meets 100% of demonstrated financial need. Like Notre Dame, Holy Cross has very strong alumni network. HC is similar to ND and Georgetown.

All your schools seem like matches to me. UVA and Georgetown are not reaches in my opinion. You would be an extremely competitive applicant for either of them.

Worcester is an hour outside of Boston and is, well, Worcester (its reputation precedes it). Holy Cross is an amazing school, but don’t go distorting it’s location.

At first glance, I thought you’d taken the PSAT five years in a row. Yeesh.

Anyway, as far as suggestions, I’d like to know more about what you want. Your schools are all great, but they’re kind of all over the place in terms of location, size, character, etc. What do you think you want to major in? If you don’t know, can you give us a broad idea (like humanities, hard sciences, etc.)?

If you don’t know exactly what you want, that’s perfectly fine too. You’ll have a better idea after you visit a few of your schools.

PS-- You don’t have to take the advice to “aim higher.” HYPS are fine places, but I think you’re wise to recognize that they might not be the places for you. With your profile, you have plenty of options, but they’re just that: options. You can do what you choose with them.

I am not too farmiliar with LAC’s but I see
no reason for any of those schools you listed to deny you, you have great credentials. You should maybe shoot higher and apply to a few ivies/top 20 schools
just to see if you get into a
couple.

Depending on what kind of school you wana go to, recommendations can be different.

Another vote that your stats are too high for some of those schools; you could end up bored.

Some who like Carleton (the most intellectual on your list) also like Grinnell, Oberlin, Swarthmore, Reed and UChicago.

Thanks everybody you’re giving me a lot of good information.

Mflevity, I’m most interested in the history, polisci, and romance languages. I don’t have any big preferences for size and location, except i prefer the north. As far as character, I’m most interested in schools with an intellectual atmosphere.

Vossron, which schools are my stats too high for? Thanks for the recs.

Yes, I would recommend Grinnell, Oberlin, Swarthmore, Reed, and Pomona too.

Do you plan on doing a sport in college or continuing with you music?

Continuing with violin, though not as a major.

^^^ You can see from the tables of your favorite college magazine (USNWR collects great info, just ignore the one-size-fits-none rankings), or google for each school’s “Common Data Set” sections C9 to C12.

I’m sorry, but this just has to be the most outrageous statement I’ve ever come across. I know it’s christened the “Harvard of Canada”, but it’s no way near as competitive in admission or calibre of students. I think anyone who actually knows the difference would agree. So please, take that with a pinch of salt, irshevan99. In fact, since it’s purely a numbers driven process, I can bet that you’ll get into McGill. I did and statistically, you’re much better than I was.

Anyway, you really need to ask yourself what you’re most interested in while searching for colleges. Are you more interested in a Liberal Arts College or a big university? What areas of study draw you? Are there geographic considerations that limit you? Keep modifying your list until you’re sure that you know each place you apply to would be somewhere you’d be happy ending up.

Also, there’s a world of difference between a Notre Dame and a Carleton? What drew you to these two? Any common thread binding the two? Maybe that’s something worth investigating, in order to look for colleges in a similar vein.

I like Notre Dame because it’s an academically fantastic school and has a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. I like Carleton because it is excellent academically and I’m a liberal arts person, which is what that school is all about.

Would someone mind chancing me in particular for W&M and ND? Those are the two I’m most concerned about.

Are you liberal or conservative? Sorry if I missed that in the thread.

irishevan99, you have more than just a good shot at William and Mary and Notre Dame, from what I can see. Good Luck! Also yes, d’smom’s question is important-it may help you make some choices.

William and Mary ?
UVA ?
Notre Dame - low reach/middle reach
Carleton - match
Kenyon ?
Macalaster - match
Boston College-match/low reach
Georgetown- low low reach
McGill?
Indiana University- in

i don’t know much about your other schools, i think you’ll get into at least 50 % of these schools

I’m a conservative but I go to a very liberal charter high school so I’m used to being in the minority on political things.

Are you from Virginia? UVA and William and Mary are both fabulous.

No I’m OOS. Yeah I love both those schools.
