Hey everyone! I thought that I would start a chain for Regular Decision since one hasn’t been made yet. So does anyone know when we hear back from them?
For the past few years it’s been around the 3rd week of March, but since they say decisions will be released by April 1st, I don’t think there’s any set date yet. Maybe once it gets closer we’ll have a better idea
do a lot of OOS people apply for W&M? I am very stressed about Virginia’s in-state law thingie that says public colleges have to have majority Virginians. I was reading UVAs in-state v OOS stats and now am freaking out for W&M :((
Go http://www.wm.edu/offices/ir/cds/index.php and then to Current Year CDS Sections > click on C: First-time First-Year Admissions (.pdf). It tells you some good info but unfortunately not number of state applicants. Notice the high number of women to apply. It seems a good amount harder to get in a women although they do accept more women.
The state the level of interest is considered as well as interview. I would see if you can get an interview if possible and make sure you do whatever you can to show interest in a good way. They do note that state residency is very important though as well as lots of other things. 31% of students from the class od 2021 are out of state.
Virginia is actually moderate to generous in terms of the OOS students attending its state universities. The number is 30% for these schools while it is in the single digits, I believe, for TX and FL and 16% for UNC. Some states, including some in the Midwest, have a higher %. Still, it is a very competitive school and more so for OOS students, and, as noted, female students. It has been that way for a long time.
One difference with UVA: William and Mary is ED and UVA is EA. Particularly in the last few years UVA OOS applicants have really soared, partially as a result of a strategy pursued by many high-stat students. They apply ED to their first choice (Duke, Chicago, etc.) and also apply EA to some of the top public flagships like UNC, UVA, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia Tech. EA applications at these other (besides UVA) flagships have also soared. Because William and Mary, like many of the top private schools, is ED, it is not part of this particular dynamic. So I’d consider that in comparing UVA to William and Mary overall acceptance rates.
William and Mary is a terrific school. Good luck!
There is data on the SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) giving presumably accurate and standardized stats for all of the institutions with cuts by In-state/OOS, etc. My recollection is UVA and W&M stats are pretty similar. I think W&M has a bit higher test scores OOS, and admissions for males appears easier than for women. Both schools have more females enrolled than males, although perhaps a bit more balanced than the national average.
Got one of the postcards today. 1500 SAT, 4.26 GPA. Does anyone know if this means I am likely to get merit aid?
@airpoz, congratulations. I don’t know but don’t think they give out much merit aid. What did the post card say? Are you instate or out of state?
Are you male or female?
Anyone else on here get a postcard?
@Windows16 I am an OOS male, the postcard basically hinted that I was going to be accepted. It also had a hand written message that said that they enjoyed my essay and that they hoped to see me on campus in the fall.
Wow! That’s great! Are you going to go? Where else are you considering and waiting on? Do you have any other qualifications that you think made your application standout? Your essay must have been terrific.
I’m strongly considering it. I got accepted into Richmond and am waiting on a few more schools like Wake Forest and Vanderbilt. I have good extracurriculars but nothing outrageous. In my essay I just tried to speak from the heart about one of my passions.
@airpoz Congratulations on the postcard. My kid got one today too, in NoVa.
I hope you understand that W&M has very, very, very little merit aid. It’s a state-supported school, not private like Wake, Richmond, and Vandy.
will everyone getting in get a postcard?
I just moved, how should I inform them of my change in address/do I need to?
@pinkzebra1234 Everyone who gets a postcard will likely get in, but those postcards are only sent to about 25% of the students who are accepted.
If you received a postcard you are in unless you do something illegal or start failing classes. My D1 got one 4 years ago and will be graduating this year. My D2 didn’t receive one but was still accepted with a scholarship , she chose Richmond. My S applied this year and has not received a postcard yet and he may not receive one. It really doesn’t mean anything, it truly is the luck of the draw. Good luck.
According to their blog post, abut 25% of accepted students will receive a post care and they will roll out on a weekly basis as the Adcom goes through the applications. Not sure how I feel about it. Great news if you get one, but could add to the stress if you don’t.
D received post card yesterday with a very nice handwritten note about her application. Such a personal touch from the school is so nice. She said W and M has the best admissions department with their nice emails and now the post cards
received a postcard today with a lovely note!! fell in love with W&M when I visited this summer and this has just made everything even better
DS received his postcard yesterday- Though, after seeing the financial aid package from UVA, he’s less excited about it than he would have been!
