William and Mary's best programs

Glad to have found this site and wealth of information! My son is a high school freshman and is beginning to think about where he wants to go to school. We live in Virginia. My brother is a WM grad and loved his experience there. What are some of W & M's strengths now in terms of programs and departments? (My brother graduated in 85, so he is unfamiliar with the current state of degrees and departmental strengths).

My son is strongly interested right now in the arts, specifically visual arts(animation, computer graphics, etc) and I was wondering how W & M's programs are in that area. I have a Liberal Arts background (UR '83) and love the size of W & M, its cost (my husband and I are both public school teachers= state supported schools are $ good! :) ), but we want him to go to a school that prepares him well for what he wants to do. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much for all of the great information!

W&M strongest areas are the social sciences, along with good placement into med schools.

It is important to keep in mind that it is a small school for a state university, and does not offer many majors that UVA and Virginia Tech have. Especially in the technology area, Tech will have many more options.

William and Mary offers these majors:
Accounting+, American Studies+#, American Legal Studies+, Anthropology+#, Applied Science+#, Biochemistry (minor only), Biology+, Black Studies, Business Administration+^, Chemistry+, Classical Studies (Latin, Greek, Hebrew), Computer Science+#, Dance (minor only),Economics, Education (certification)+#, English, Environmental Science/Studies, Film Studies (minor only), Fine Arts, Geology, Government, History+#, International Relations, International Studies (International Relations and separate concentrations in African, East Asian, European, Latin American, Middle Eastern and Russian Studies), Kinesiology, Law^, Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies, Marine Science+#, Mathematics+, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Military Science, Modern Languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish), Music, Philosophy, Physics+#, Psychology+#, Public Policy+, Religion, Sociology, Theatre and Speech, Women's Studies

UVA or Tech will alow more specialization into computer related degree.

Can anyone describe the classical humanities department at W & M. Strength of dept. professors etc.

Thanks for taking time to reply with so much information soccerguy. I saw on WM's website and your reply that they do have a fine arts program, but do they actually offer a B.F.A.? When I looked on their site under the academics link, there was a B.A. listed, but I did not see a B. F. A. If he continues with this interest in art, have you any knowledge about the strength of that particular area? We have VCU right near our home, which has an excellent arts program, but it is a big school with an urban setting. I went there for my Master's (bt not in Art) many moons ago, and unfortunately
didn't get what I thought was a great experience in education. But, things there have improved from what I understand. Thanks again!

I don't know about them having a BFA.

I do not know about the art programs really, so I don't think I can help much there. There are different tracks for 3D/2D/printmaking art majors. I have heard that VCU's program there is solid.

My friends at VCU seem to be enjoying themselves, except for this incident:

Dear Students:

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. Sunday night, an off-duty Richmond City Sheriff's Deputy reported that someone was shooting a gun in the area around Daddio's Night club (813 West Grace Street) where a large group of high school students had gathered. More than 20 Richmond and VCU police responded to the scene and cleared the crowd. It was immediately apparent that a bullet went through the front glass doors of the VCU Occupational Health Services on the first floor below the West Grace Residence Hall. Monday morning, it was discovered that a second bullet had gone through the window of a third floor room and lodged in the wall. Police have recovered the bullets and are using them in the investigation.

grasslands, classical studies? I probably can't help much because the only class I took there was Roman Civ which I had to drop after taking an impossibly hard exam. You can major in Greek, Latin, or Classic Civilization.
