I'm a brown guy. I've done 3+ of TaeKwonDo (back in elementary school though). I got a blackbelt and all. Point is, I was exposed to Korean culture and language quite a bit.

I was introduced to Korean Pop music few years back. I've been listening to it for about 3.5 years now. I've picked up on even more words than I already knew (noticing recurring phrases in songs, reading translations and romanizations). I also sometimes watch shows, comedies, dramas, movies.

I was thinking for my creative supplement for W&M, what if I spoke in Korean (with subtitles at the bottom) and talked about my interest in the Korean culture? I could talk about how I started listening to other genres of Korean music, and started watching movies and dramas, eating Korean food and stuff? and how I find it fascinating how the korean music industry is advancing and stuff?

I can already speak 3 other languages, so I figured speaking entirely in korean in the video could emphasize on how I'm into cultures and stuff.

I'm fully aware of how weird this is. I get that it's kinda ridiculous, but I mean the point of the supplement is to show how we're unique and what kind of people we are right?

I’d really appreciate it if someone would give me some advice on this.

If the W&M creative supplement allows for the submission of a personal video, I think this could be a good idea. Just make sure you delve deeper than the types of Korean food/music that you like. The discussion of the advancement of the Korean music industry is a good idea, especially if you have an interest in that field.

If the W&M creative supplement suggests you submit an essay (or a more traditional format of submission), I think you’d be better off sticking with an essay. You can convey the same points with the same passion in an essay as you can in a video. It all depends, in my opinion, on whether or not the school expects videos to be submitted for this part of the application.

I think the creative supplement prompt of w&m says to pretty much do w/e we think would best convey the point. I’ve seen make videos about their characteristics, stuff in their room, etc. So would it be okay?

Also my GPA isn’t particularly high. My SAT is 2060 at the moment but I’m trying to raise it. So I’m trying to get as many points possible with the video. Would the korean speaking with subs be a mediocre idea only? Would it be able to help me much? Thanks to all.

I see. Be a little careful. That thread is two years old, and the W&M CA supplement for fall 2012 isn’t available yet. Before you get too carried away, you should see whether that option is still available this fall.

Speak in Korean, subtitles in English. Not the other way around.

Given the wording of the directions in the supplement, it seems that W&M wants its optional supplements to be restricted to one sheet of paper; I don’t see anywhere that says videos are okay, except for a W&M official’s comment on a blog post from 2 years ago. If you want to go the video route, you should probably e-mail the Admissions Office and just ask if a video is okay.

Yea of course. That’s what I meant, sorry. The other way around would be useless.

I’ll try that. Is there a way to ask the Dean through this forum?
