So is generally the thought that it will be between 5 and 6 pm as in the last?

Our counselor said Williams might email the applicant during the day today to give them a more specific time. If anyone receives that, will you share? My daughter is competing in a CyberPatriots computer science competition from noon to 4:30, so she can’t reach me!

Good luck to all!

My DD just got deferred. Does anyone have an idea on percentage of deferreds at Williams?
GPA 4.0/4.58
SAT 1550
ACT 36
AP Class 8(5 on 6, 4 on 2), taking 4 more AP now.
AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Semi Finalist
Extracurricular Above average, all related to her major, Political Science
Essays 9/10
Nationally ranked CA public school

I am not surprised by deferred considering how tough is to go to any college nowadays, however, I am still disappointed.
ED acceptance rate wasn’t as high as I thought after athletes, and other priority admissions. She’s not that down though, knowing that she can apply to all the other schools on her list. We will still consider Williams if she get admitted thru RD.

Your D is an impressive candidate. I would bet she does well in RD. I agree that a large percentage of ED acceptances are recruited athletes, URM and Questbridge. A couple of years ago my unhooked D was deferred from another NESCAC, Middlebury, and got in RD and was accepted to Williams. Good luck!

Thank you for your kind words. I am sure that she will come out of this fine and she will be happy at other college which might be even better than Williams. It’s just that she has to go thru the stressful whole process for next few months.

My DD also deferred. I haven’t seen anywhere Williams releases percentages but our guess is it’s not great. They say 5-10% in an average year - and last year and this year is not that.

GPA 4.0/4.72
SAT 1580 (800 on math)
AP Class 9(5 on all taken so far)
AP Scholar with Distinction
Extracurricular Above average, all related to her major, comp sci
CyberPatriot president, National council of women in technology winner
Head of technical theatre and stage management at school and submitted a technical theatre (costume and stage design) supplement as well as the writing sample
And so on

She’s obviously disappointed as she’s wanted to go there since visiting with her older sister (Davidson 2024) three years ago( and visiting two more times since.)

Her catch now is she also liked Wash U - and has to decide if she applies ED2 there. That would obviously mean giving up on Williams altogether. And is clearly also no walk in the park. Well, the process continues!

I am sure you all are proud of your daughters, they are really impressive and I trust they will get into excellent schools eventually. Just want to clarify: 5-10% is the percentage of ED applicants they deferred to RD? Thanks.

No, that figure was what is commonly in articles when I was looking around to try to figure out the chances of a deferred student being accepted to a super competitive school once dropped into regular decision. The number that is usually given as a generic average was 5 to 10%.

Williams doesn’t release that number ever so there’s no really good way to know? Those were also numbers from articles that were really pre-Covid figures, and I don’t even know that they apply now.

The main takeaway we have is that she’s going to need to see it as a long shot and really consider the process outside if that deferral. (That’s why the Wash U dilemma weighs heavily.) We shall see!

How are you doing on your safeties? Have to heard from them? If yes, then you can go RD at WashU and see how deferred from Williams and RD at WashU pan out.

It’s a tough call. Part of me says you should do ED2 at WashU as even with 5-10% chance of deferred becoming accepted , it is lower than ED2 acceptance at WashU

My daughter got into Williams ED after being deferred ED… If you love it hang in there. It is such a stressful process!

I mean she got in rd after being deferred…really strong candidates like your daughter have a very good chance RD.

Her safety is U Rochester which she would just be applying to now along with the other schools for RD.

In addition to Wash U, she has Tufts, Brown, and a few others on her list. Wash U was definitely her second choice, but her heart was so hoping for Williams. The thing is they are very different schools, albeit all competitive.

It’s hard to say to pass up the better odds of another ED opportunity, especially Wash U. It takes almost 60% of the class in the two early rounds.

The data from this article from last year is brutal - I don’t think it will be quite this extreme, but the challenge is still so much higher in these covid times.

That’s a touch one. It’s so hard to make good decisions when there is a randomness to this whole process. My dd LOVES Williams and much to my dismay decided to REA to any Ivy. Not optimistic there and I worry she “wasted” her ED advantage. The whole ED thing makes a bad system that much worse.
