So I was speaking with someone in the Williams community who reported that the number of apps this year is similar to the number of apps last year. (In WilliamsSpeak this means that application numbers are down.) I should mention that this source is not the most trustworthy.

Has anyone heard anything regarding number of applications. (Haon?) It looks like virtually everyone else is up. In fact, the number of apps at Amherst increased by almost 20 percent.

I don't have any numbers to back it up, but I can't imagine that it's helping to have a new student center still a few years away and a giant hole in the middle of campus. I know when I visited as a prefrosh a few years back the view of Baxter lawn surrounded by Chapin, Baxter, Sawyer, etc. with the mountains around it was one of those things that made me fall in love with the school. Not to say that a construction project would affect numbers that dramatically, but it is one deterrent.

Whether they have counted the apps yet or not, there aren't any public numbers that I am aware of. Numbers fluctuate from year to year so even if apps are down this year, I'm not particularly concerned. As bex56 says, I can't imagine that the Baxter hole is really helping the situation out any.

I talked to Admissions about this a couple days ago...there is no official count as of yet (sorry). I would guess that we'll probably see very little change from last year (which is good news for the institution and bad news for prospective students).

ADMISSION APPLICATIONS HIT NEW HIGH
The College has received a total of 5,742 applications for the Class of 2008, up from 5,704 for the Class of 2007 and a new record. According to Director of Admission Richard Nesbitt 74 "all indications are that the quality of this pool is extraordinary. Competition for spaces will be as keen as ever."

I believe the 5704 is correct for 2008, not 2007 (2007 was much lower than that, somewhere south of 5500). This is from an email recently received from the college, so I believe the figures are accurate for the class of 2009, and that the class years quoted are just a typo. So it looks like admission this year will be even a little tougher, sorry. On the bright side, if you get in, its a huge accomplishment, and if you don't, it's far from something to be really upset about, given how incredibly competitive it has become. Admission percentage this year will likely end up in the 18 percent range ...

I got that e-mail too. Inside sources tell me that the average SAT score of APPLICANTS was slightly over 1400. They seem to have been correct thus far, so I am trusting them.
