Me, either. AA really didn't factor into your decision (it's been shown not to really affect those of white applicants) but I'm sure that your attitude likely did.

Since they knew he was going to react that way...?

No, but he did submit essays, and I wouldn't be shocked if he came off like a prick.

Funny part is that it's so blatantly AA. I'm a white male, 2200 SAT, National Merit, IB 4.3 gpa, tons of semi-pro music ECs, plenty of stuff.

Rotten luck, huh? Born 40 years too late. In 1965, it was all white males with a quota of no more than 10% Jewish.

It was wrong 40 years ago and it is wrong now in reverse at the University of Michigan School of Law (Scalia's scathing rebuttal of their quota system is short and to the point). IF Williams is using any kind of quota system based upon race, religion, sex, etc, then they have some work ahead of them. Any other random selection method is their choice, particularly given the average level of amazing applicant they get each season. If they determine, in their sole discretion, that a prick is what they need to round out their version of a "diverse class", then they should be able to select a prick with no complaints from the gallery. One would hope that no prick would be left out of the process based upon race, religion, sex, etc...

My dad has already been shunned because of AA (And he was told so). All you kids who say it doesn't exist or it doesn't factor are completely brainwashed by the PC machine. To deny it is simple-minded.

Like I said, I'm not mad so don't be calling me a prick. There are many places I'd rather spend my 4 years of undergrad. No, that's not an attack on Williams either so don't get started on that.

But the next time you're feeling like being the PC police and jumping on anything I say, reconsider.

any other letters or emails?

"My dad has already been shunned because of AA (And he was told so)."

I'm sorry you AND your Dad are "less qualified". Better luck next time. Have a nice life!

Less qualified based on race? Where have we heard that before...

Christm4sKitty,
I assume that you are being sarcastic with your note. Unfortunately, sarcasm does not always come across as such in writing. Be careful not to get caught up in Visirale's bitter stupidity.

Christm4sKitty

Consider this.

92% of the class of 2010 is from the top decile of their high school class. Thats about 490 students. 51%, or 270 students, scored between 700-800 on verbal section of the SAT; 63%, or 330 students, scored between 700-800 on the math section.

What does this tell us? Well, the vast majority of the students who made it into the class were just as qualified, if not more qualified, than you are. If Williams wanted to, it could just accept every applicant with near perfect SATs/GPAs. In that case, you would undoubtedly be accepted. But colleges don't just want the kids who can ace every test that comes their way. They want interesting kids, stories, people who will contribute something new. It's completely normative and unquantifiable, but that's life.

Folks -

I know some of you are terribly upset and hurt. I'm a big believer in free speech and also in the healing power of venting, but I would appreciate it if some of you (you'll know who you are) would back off a bit from the sort of things you've been posting.

You are hurt and unhappy. There are other people here for whom this should be a really happy time. Please don't spoil it for them. And please don't turn my college's acceptance thread into a debate over affirmative action (or purported affirmative action or whatever it is that each of you thinks is behind your decision) -- there are other places, both on CC and elsewhere, that would be much better venues for that.

If you are as hurt as you seem to be, some of you may want to pursue the wait list if that option is open to you (I'm assuming that the hurt is an indication of how much you wanted to go to Williams). You may have forgotten that you may be identifiable and that ranting here is not going to help your chances. One of you has mentioned several present Williams connections. I don't want to make you paranoid but I would imagine that quite a few people who know those connections could figure out who you are from your postings, which could be awkward for you and for others.

So, please, for your sake and everyone else's here, let's let the sting cool off here and change the tone.

Thank you for doing what you can on that in a tough time. I've been rejected in admissions before and I write this as one who sees every wait list and every rejection with a "there but for..." twinge. I wish you good luck and I hope that the hurt starts going away fast.

To those who called me stupid: You've never even met me. Hahha, how ridiculous can you get? I'm not "Utterly stupid." I hold a job, I do a hell of a lot in school, I do more out side of school (6 different music ensembles), I maintain a great social life, and I love life. I'm not stupid by any stretch of the imagination, and I'd venture to say I'm a lot more socially capable than many of you.

Like I said, I'm not mad at all. I hate Williamstown. I loved Amherst, I just wanted to apply to both. I'm just defending my own character which you guys seem so anxious to tear down.
