I got in! runs around in circles

Environmentalist--It is what it is..for everyone who was accepted, waitlisted or rejected. I can't believe anyone's rantings could spoil the happiness of someone who has been accepted. Everyone on this board is smart enough to take it for what it is.

Years ago, I was in a graduate program as the only female. Even though they didn't know anything about me, some of the guys started off assuming that I "only got in because I was female." I knew it wasn't true but it still made me uncomfortable. I think that sort of thing may be what Enviromentalist is worrying about.

To the new Ephs: welcome. Don't let anybody take away from this experience of the beginning of a wonderful time in your lives.

I honestly don't think that my sarcastic post or Viserale's posts could take away the "really happy time." If it does, then they probably lack the emotional maturity for college, ha! I see that the "identifiable" person is me, but:
1. Who would care to identify me if all I said was that affirmative action helps in the admissions process?
2. If people wanted to judge the "other" for my post, then it would only hurt them for their ignorance.

I got my acceptance stuff today :)

Pretty sticker. I dunno where to put it.

Accepted

Congrats to all acceptees:)

I'm an international and I haven't received an email or a letter yet. Lets be honest--is this a rejection? =(

Waitlisted at my first choice :( I really loved Williams and williamstown, but i'm not too bitter. The whole process was fun and at least got into all my other schools (Midd, Bowdoin, and Pomona)

Decision: Waitlisted

SAT I: m730,v770,w780
SAT II: US History 750, Bio 770
GPA: 3.99 uw
RANK: 1 out of 25
COURSE LOAD: most demanding (10+ APs)
ESSAY: I loved it ...though kinda religious
TEACHER REC: two great, one average
COUNSELOR REC: amazing
STATE: UT
SCHOOL TYPE: private christian
ETHNICITY: white
GENDER: male
OTHER: Lots of committed and passionate ECs. I don't think i was waitlisted because of them.

"because of AA (And he was told so). All you kids who say it doesn't exist or it doesn't factor are completely brainwashed by the PC machine. To deny it is simple-minded."

There is some truth to this statement. From Williams "News and Events" (on the Williams website):

"February 17, 2003 -- University Wire reported that Williams College joined Tufts University, Amherst College, Bates College, and Wesleyan University in signing a Supreme Court brief supporting the University of Michigan's affirmative action policies.

May 3, 2002 -- The Jewish Bulletin News of Northern California mentioned Williams College as an institution that is supporting its Jewish community in an article on the efforts of several colleges to increase their Jewish population."

That's why comments such as:

"I'm sorry you AND your Dad are 'less qualified'. Better luck next time. Have a nice life!"

are wrong-headed and hateful (as are many of mini's other posts).

Every acceptance to every college is, in some form, affirmative action. As Grace and others have noted, each admissions office tries to build its incoming class based on what it considers most desirable in any particular year. And private institutions are entirely within their rights to extend offers of admission to any students they choose. As zspot9 and others commented, this does not mean that those applicants who do not receive acceptances are any less qualified -- just that an institution's particular goals precluded every qualified applicant from receiving an offer of admission.

Waitlisted too.....as was the other girl from my school who applied. I don't think I'm a good fit for Williams but I have a lot of respect for the school. Congrats to all who got in!

Wow...this discussion has gotten very heated. Personally, I think that being a low-income student from a rural area of Northern California whose parents didn't graduate from college had a positive affect on my application. I'm not saying that's why I got in, but it's true that colleges want students from all backgrounds.

Sluther - I congratulate you and agree wtih you! Schools like Williams strive to create a diverse studunt body. They do this by accepted qualified students of many different backrounds. Those who do not appreciate this fact would probably not have fit in too well.

For those who want to get a further sense of what schools like Williams face when piles of thousands of well qualified applicants send in there materials should look at this week's story in the NY Times -

Click on the link to Esther's essay on the left of the article. It is one of the most perfect essays I have ever read. Yet this applicant got rejected from Williams.

It's a killer year for admissions. A virtual tsunami of applicants. You're all well qualified I'm sure. You'll all do well regardless where you go. Accept it. Move on. And be gracious to those who were accepted.

I'm seeing a lot of people who are very qualified report rejections and waitlistings on this board. It's sad. I was accepted, but I have know idea what my hook was.
SAT Math/Verbal/Writing: 650/800/730. SAT II: Lit - 760, World Hist - 740.
My school is an unconventional one, doesn't do GPAs, or AP courses.
Congrats to all acceptees, and condolences to all others. Don't let yourself think you didn't deserve it.

Oh and I'm an XY Chromosome. Maybe that helps.

Dear Boy - if you're an XY chromosome (sic) what happened to all the traits coded for on the remaining 22 pairs ;)

nautilus1700, congrats to you and thanks for the kind words to those who were waitlisted/rejected.

(quote) "Congrats to all acceptees, and condolences to all others. Don't let yourself think you didn't deserve it."

Waitlisted! After some indications from my College Counsellor, I was expecting a rejection, so this came as a surprise today.
I'm going to stay on the waitlist, but I already have another choice that I am very happy with, so whatever Williams decides, I'll be okay. However, I was also deferred ED, so I wish they would just make up their minds already!
Is there anyone else in the same situation (deferred ED and waitlisted)?

what's your other choice ellmtree? i STILL haven't received my email yet and i'm an international! grrrr...

This year's Rd results make me scared;Williams decision seems to become more unpredictable. I am feel even sadness for the all the over qualified applicants who haven't heard good news. Congratulations for future ephs!

Nautilus, aren't you a local student? I think that was probably your "hook," as it probably was with me too.
