Ellie, Williams and the Berkshires are a wonderful environment for someone who loves the outdoors and wants easy access to nature. Williams Outing Club offers activities for serious climbers/trekkers/Eagle Scouts and also for quiet let’s take a hike kind of enthusiasts. The profound natural beauty of the surrounding area is one of Williams most salient features which permeates every aspect of the experience.

I wouldn’t stress too much about the drinking culture. My son and many of his friends were light or non drinkers and they did fine. All three of these schools do attract an outgoing, confident, active personality type. I mean this in a good way as the more introverted students tend to be swept along with the energy. The fact that you’ve chosen Williams/Dartmouth/Northwestern vs say Swarthmore/Brown/Chicago seems to contradict your own self description, but maybe you mean you’re serious and driven rather than shy or reclusive.

The Williams entry system (whereby a 20 to 30 first years live together with two junior advisors) is good for people who may not make friends easily , From the moment you arrive you have a social group for dinners, get togethers, parties etc. Also, the orientation camping trip would be an ideal set up for a shy nature lover to get to know his/her classmates.

I also wouldn’t worry too much about job/internship opportunities. Williams – and I would think the same could be said for Dartmouth and Northwestern – is very aggressive in placing students and graduates and the alumni/ae network is amazingly strong.
