Winter 2010 Transfers: UCSD or UCSC?

All reasonable stuff. I know very little about UCSC, so I’m not going to knock it or even compare it to UCSD. I’ve just got boots on the ground here, and figure I can clear some things up for people making their decisions. Not even trying to convince you. (:

No real info on part time jobs in the area. I know they exist. There is a shopping center and a mall very nearby. I know three people who work at the movie theater. But I don’t know what getting those jobs is like, given the economy. Actually, though, there are a lot of on campus jobs. Not just food service, but administrative, lab, etc.

There are plenty of undergrad opportunities at UCSD that trump the lab monkey jobs at UCSD. Both campuses will have both. How many of which will depend on your department. I just recommend getting a sense from the respective departments before making a decision based on that, because UCSD also has a strong undergrad research reputation.

The transfer community at UCSD is a lot different than the freshman entry community. My guess is that you’ll find the same sort of people at either campus.

And, yeah, I put “cultured” in scare quotes. :P

Cheers.

what is cool about ucsd social life is if you do not like it san diego county has alot more to offer so i know i am safe there.
The thing about ucsc that is attracting me is the cool weather, more rain and lower temps.
I really like that it is a college town, The campus architecture is cool, i am also very pro environmental protection and building California’s infrastructure( i do not know how involved ucsd is in that venture.) also the students are very laid back and i know it would be easier to stand out at ucsc academically.
What is bringing me toward ucsd is it would be an easy transition because it is closer to me, the school has alot more majors and available classes, they have transfer specific housing, san diego county has alot of activities to chose from and they are in close proximity.
how different is the transfer community. I do not like people who swear they are the greatest people in the world because they are at ucsd

emp- i did not mean you were one of the ones selling it to me i know you,sam and kgz are giving me your reason for attending which is helping me so thank you all for your insight.

Sure. (:

I feel like the transfer students just aren’t as tied to the whole college “thing”. We made a practical decision–go to CC, or do something else, or whatever–and then we cut our own path for a bit. Like I said, you’ll probably find the same great sort of people at UCSC. I guess I’m proud to be at UCSD, but that’s largely because it’s a great place for my major.

I’ve heard some people express regret about getting into the UCSD transfer housing. Basically, it’s expensive and you’re living with 3-5 other people. It does include meals and such, and has a great view. Some people love it, some people regret it.

I’m not familiar with any particularly pro-environment or infrastructure concerns here at UCSD.

Cheers.

I didn’t miss an argument, I just quoted/paraphrased his post.
No hard feelings, I just thought some of your conclusions were not substantiated.

UCSD is considered an environmentaly friendly university. Check out this link.

[Sustainability Solutions Institute - UCSD Named One of the Greenest Campuses - Oct. 9, 2009](http://ssi.ucsd.edu/esiportal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=322&Itemid=101)

there was no argument to begin with…???

i would like to get involved in th ucsd environment stuff are there clubs or an orginization i can join to help influence the administration

and just lo let all u ucsd defenders know that is where i have decided to go

btw i di not get anything in the mail yet from ucsd
Maybe my stuff will arrive today but what information is supposed to come in the mail.

wait so did you qualify for TAG or not?

i knew that i did and i called today to be sure and the admissions director assured me that as long as i reported my information correctly on my application i am in.Even if THEY made a mistake in calculating my gpa they will not rescind my admission.
I also reserved a transfer dorm in the village.

Hi, just wanted to thank you guys for all your insight. I decided on UCSD, but this was definitely a tough choice for me. I recently got back from a visit to UCSC, and wow, it’s so beautiful there. There seems to be a real sense of community too. Ultimately, the fact that UCSD is closer to a big city tipped the scales for me. I guess it’s good that the deadline has passed now, so we can just focus on our school of choice. empirescrumble, I live in LA too, and even though I love it here, I totally understand wanting a change of scenery lol. Good luck in Santa Cruz! :)
