Hello, I am applying to Brandeis for winter 2017. I am in my sophomore year at my local community college and have a 3.78 GPA. All A’s and A-s except for a B- in honors English. I Have taken many honors courses. I have three very strong letter of recs as well as an excellent personal statement and “why Brandeis” supplement essay. I did poorly in high school, about a 3.0. But, my family was on food stamps and I had to take shifts at McDonald’s to help support my family. I am the VP of French club at my CC. I know Brandeis is need-aware for transfer and I require a lot of aid. Is it crazy to think I have a chance?

Hey there, I’m also applying for winter 2017! I don’t know your chances but I wish you the best of luck! Bump!
@myspacerules91 thanks for the comment! Where are you transferring from? Also, what are your stats? You don’t have to answer the last part if you don’t want to:)
I’m originally from a Los Angeles community college but I moved to Boston about a year ago so I’m in a local CC here.
I have a 3.97 over about 60 credits and I’m a member of the honors program in my current and previous school. I am a (somewhat) older student returning to academia, so I have past work experience. I worked as an assistant winemaker, wine educator and I managed the operations of a wine label back in Los Angeles. I’m an amateur boxer and used to volunteer by teaching boxing back in LA, mostly for women’s self-defense. I currently work at a Boston public policy think tank in the communications department. I’m planning to do an Interdisciplinary major in math, economics and computer science. My goal is to advance my career at my current workplace by moving into a data scientist role. I don’t have any on-campus leadership positions but because of my age and circumstances, I hope they don’t hold that against me.
@myspacerules91 you have a great GPA and coming from Boston I think is a plus. How do you feel about your essays? I believe those are very important. When there is a gap in education, the main thing is explaining what you have been doing in the meantime. Did you submit a resume? Overall I think you have a solid chance, but it’s spring so I’m not sure. Do you require a lot of aid? They are need-aware.
@myspacerules91 are you just in the honors program for having a solid GPA or have you taken honors courses? How rigorous is your course load?
I’m taking honors classes, but CC’s generally don’t offer honors classes for everything (at least mine didn’t). I take as much as is offered and is within my course plan (which has been about 4). I’ve been following the CA transfer articulation agreement with the UC system and I’m on track for their guaranteed transfer agreement, I’m just catching up on Calc 2. I had a career in the wine industry while i wasn’t in school. I was unable to go to college for financial reasons and family issues, which tend to go hand in hand. I’ve been working 30+ hours a week since i was 15, usually more than two or more jobs at a time. I elaborated about the circumstances of this in the common application supplement. My honors college writing prof gave my essays the stamp of approval and my boyfriend is a PhD, who has written books and papers and is extremely critical, also approved. My immediate supervisor, the director of communications, and the executive director of my institute wrote me very generous letters of recommendation. I submitted those in addition to my academic evaluations, which I was able to read and were also very generous. I do have financial need though, so that may play a larger factor than I anticipated.
Yeah, I think you have a good chance. They accept a higher percentage of women than men. Not sure if that signals anything. Are you attending school in Boston or California? Which guaranteed transfer agreement are you following?
That’s interesting to know. It’s the TAPP agreement for the UC system in California, but I currently live and study here in Boston. There aren’t very many articulation agreements outside of the UMASS schools and I had already begun my course plan under the TAPP, so I just stuck with it. For econ, you basically need Calc 2 and Intro Micro/Macro minimum for major declaration anyways. TAPP is pretty LAC style in their course requirements so I gather that it should take care of the core requirements. What are you wanting to major in? If I had to guess, you should probably get in based on what you have provided. I just don’t know anything about spring transfer acceptance rates. I cast a pretty wide net with applications to 7 schools (at least I think its wide). We’ll see!
@myspacerules91 at Brandeis I would major in politics. I only applied to two schools for spring semester. If they don’t work out I am more than fine being at my cc another semester because my GPA will increase and I’ll be one of 5 students to graduate from the honors program. I will also be able to apply to many more schools. The great thing about articulation agreements is that they do know out most of the gen eds. We are less than a month away from notification!

got in good luck @Arsenalfan245 !
Hi everybody,
My S is applying to Brandeis as a transfer for fall 2017. He’s actually in a CC, second year, in gen eds.
Major: film
College GPA: 3.7
HS GPA: 3.6
Ecs: dance for 5 years. Two jobs, one as a manager in an ice cream shop. The other one is less regular in a carwash.
Animation 1 and 2 at Lesley university, Film production 1 at BU summer semester, Professional certificate at Emerson in screenwriting (finishing his 3rd and last semester for the certificate).
Bilingual French / American.
He’s also applying to BU and Emerson college for Film, and was accepted to Suffolk and Umass Boston for Criminal Justice.
His top choice is Emerson, and Brandeis comes second.
We were surprised that Brandeis needed so many documents for the FA package. Usually universities ask for CSS profile and Fafsa, but this Brandeis wants a lot more.
We are hopping the best for everybody.
