Winter Clothes?? (help!)

Hello,

I will be entering Johns Hopkins as a student in the class of 2015. I'm from Southern California, and I have never lived in the snow for more than 2 days. I will be leaving a week early for school so that I have time to shop for winter clothes on the east coast. The problem is that I have NO idea what kind of clothes people wear in the winter in Baltimore, or how cold it will get.

Could you please give me advice?

Do people wear thigh-length coats, or do they just layer? About how many coats/jackets will I need? What kind of shoes? Colorful is stylish, right?

I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks~ :)

I’m also from SoCal. As for pants, jeans are usually good, but a bit on the thin side. Jeans aren’t bad, but something a bit thicker and more water-repellent is preferable. As for top, a thick sweater/jacket on top of a shirt sufficed for me. The coldest days aren’t the snow days, but the windy days in the winter. For some days, a thick sweater would work, but for these windy days, you should bring a very very thick, heat-containing jacket. I had one thick sweater for most days, and a thick, padded, wool jacket for the really windy days.

I also brought thick socks, but never used them. Feet aren’t a problem in windy days, but during snow days, you should wear some wool socks. I didn’t, and often ended up with wet shoes, socks, and feet on the way to classes.

Also bought a pair of 1$ cheap, tight fitting gloves at a target at the town center. Those served me throughout the year, but were never really necessary.

It will not begin to get cold until late October-November probably! The heat index will probably be in the 90s when you get here. You may feel a little silly shopping for winter gloves and a coat then. Your best bet is to wait. You can easily find verything you need later at the mall , Target or order from the Land’s End Fall/Winter catalog when it comes out. The winters are not that cold but you will need a jacket-no thigh length-peacoat style is popular, scarf, hat, gloves and some warm hoodies. Also Uggs or other boots (if you are a girl).

Hi  I’ll be going to JHU next year too, and I’m from Minnesota so luckily I already have winter gear! Here in Minnesota, the bad days aren’t the snowy ones, like StrangeCamus said, but the bitingly cold ones.
For days like that, I just thought I’d add, covering your EARS is really important! My ears alwayyys get cold in the winter and it can be QUITE uncomfortable. So ear muffs work well or a hat that covers your ears if you aren’t worried about your hair or anything!
You’ll only really need one winter coat, any more would be a little silly. I have a short peacoat that I will be bringing with me. It’s not thigh length or anything, it just helps to have extra layers
Other than that, throughout the winter I wear mostly jeans with a thick long-sleeved shirt or a sweatshirt (or both if it’s really cold) and it’s plenty sufficient.

I would like to add on to everyone elses’ responses here by saying that Baltimore tends to rain A LOT. So make sure you bring your rain gear and extra umbrellas or rain boots.

While I’m not going to JHU, I an from Maryland and can say that hats are a must! I like to wear beanies that cover my ears during the cold months and a hoodie with a windbreaker for those windy cold days. Sometimes it is nice to have a pair of boots for the days when there is a foot of snow on the ground, but normally sneakers will be fine. Jeans are normal for cold days but you might want a couple pairs of non absorbent pants for snowy days (nothing worse than sitting in class with wet jeans).
