Where in Cambridge are reasonable stores for winter coats, etc.? As a Floridian, my son has nothing to prepare him for the NE winters, and we don't have any appropriate stores here in South Florida. Any suggestions for name brands?

There's a mall very close to campus, the Cambridgeside Galleria, that contains run-of-the mill clothing and department stores. It's within walking distance of Kendall Square, but they also run a shuttle every 20 minutes between Kendall and the mall.

For serious winter gear, I like EMS in Harvard Square. I'm a cold weenie, and my down-filled winter coat keeps me warm in even the most brutal Boston weather.

North Face is pricey but is commonly seen on campus. There's one on Newbury Street in Boston.

A free shuttle!

OHHHH FREE!

Boston is awesome! there are shuttles everywhere!! even at 3AM!

Well, to be fair, the free shuttle to the Galleria does not run until 3 AM. :) I think it only runs until 8 PM. (It's a shuttle run by the mall, not by MIT.)

"CambridgeSide Galleria offers a free shuttle service between CambridgeSide Galleria and MBTA Kendall Square T Stop (Red Line). The bus runs every 20 minutes from 9am to 7pm Monday - Saturday and 12pm - 7pm Sunday. "

You can find everything you need online, no matter where you live. For Northface products, just visit the company website: www.northface.com; for a greater range of apparel, visit the Recreational Equipment Incorp. (REI) webiste: REI: Outdoor Gear, Equipment & Clothing for Camping, Hiking, Cycling, Fitness, Kayaking, Canoeing and More.

Thanks for all the responses. Now I'll highjack my own thread and ask another question, re: room refrigerators; can they be rented on-campus? How?

Um, I don't think so, sometimes upperclassmen are looking to get rid of fridges for pretty cheap when you're moving onto campus, so don't go buy one at home and ship it or anything. But most likely you'll buy your own at a nearby store.

You can find someone selling old fridges on campus.

I'd like to just correct this. Um, no, Boston is not that awesome. Those 3AM shuttles? MIT is awesome. Maybe other colleges also run shuttles; those places are awesome. Boston itself however shuts down its subway/bus system before 1AM, and most of its places of entertainment long before then.

(grumble grumble used to the city that never sleeps.. :P)

Being used to Cali, there aren't many shuttles around... It will be nice not to have to drive for a change...
Hopefully I won't be out THAT late at "non-academic" locations. (frats are part of MIT and can be reached by MIT shuttles... clearly, it is related to academics XP)

i live in florida, and just bought a north face jacket in the store!
i think it's the only north face in florida lol and it was recently opened.
it's in orlando.. if you live close enough, i can give you more details!

I have the southern problem too. I bought North Face and other stuff on-line at

MountainGear.com; Outdoor gear and clothing for climbing, hiking, skiing, camping & backpacking.

Some of it was deeply discounted. Probably last year's styles, but who cares.

Boston is SO much amazingness. In California, we have to drive to train station.

Which is especially bad if your car breaks down at a red light and you need to catch the train in 10 minutes. grumble grumble yesterday grumble

Aww!! I don't like driving at all... I rather just sit there and not have to worry about running a red light or crash into someone while I doze off.

I think I heard somewhere that we should get the longer jackets to keep our legs warm?
My mom got me a down puffy jacket 2 weeks before I got into MIT(foreshadowing? psychic? or just being asian and taking advantage of the good deal). It is nice a long and super warm. Only one problem, it is cream colored. So I'll have to figure out how not to completely kill it while it gets washed.
