Winter ED

My D is thinking of applying to Smith during the second round of ED due Jan. 1st. Any ideas as to when she would hear about acceptence or deferral? I've checked the website, but have seen no date for a response. Thanks.

I imagine it will be about the same as ED1, about 6 weeks. I would call and confirm my opinion. Good luck to your daughter. It’s an incredible college.

Last year I think it was around Feb. 10, I think. Good luck to your d. (My d. chose Smith over both Williams and Amherst and would make the same decision again in a snap.)

That Feb. 10 date seems right to me as well. Good luck.

BJM8, I'll catch up with the PM in the morning...must...sleep.

Being fairly new to CC, I am so amazed at how wonderful you people are. How helpful, and how understanding. This is truly a wonderful site with great, intelligent people providing help during a very difficult time in out kids lives. Thank you so much for your concern and offerings of help. I really do think that Smith is a better fit for my D than Amherst, and personally not too upset by the deferral. My D on the other hand....

BJM8, feel free to e-mail me if you want any feedback from the parent of a senior Smithie. My D is also a Gold Key tour guide, largely due to her enthusiasm for the school. She told me this summer she "couldn't imagine having gone anywhere else for college." She actually has enough credits to graduate this January, but H and I agreed to give her the gift of her final semester on campus, while she picks up extra credits -- a mix of "non-required-but-good-to-have-academically" courses and other "If not now, when?" classes. I told her this may be the last time in her life when it is truly "all about her," as the Smith catalog says.

Best wishes to your D, and let me know if we can be of any help.

Jyber209 and her D were a couple of very helpful pieces to the puzzle in my D's process and one of J's e-mails to me early on was instrumental in making me comfortable with Smith as a possibility.

BJM8,
My daughter is a freshman at Smith and has had a terrific experience. She came back from school-excited, motivated, and happy. Couldn't ask much more as a parent. She found the courses she took challenging and imaginative. She attended an excellent magnet public high school and took 10 AP courses but has never enjoyed her learning more. She also has had a chance to participate on the team of her sport, volunteer in several organizations as well as represent her house in the college council. She loves Northampton and the whole 5 college area with its many activities and cross-registration for classes. In fact, she will take a class next semester at Hampshire. We visited Smith when our family attended my class reunion at Amherst. She made four trips to Smith (two on her own during her junior spring break and senior fall semester) and knew when she applied that it was the top choice for her. She did not find the transition to a women's college difficult, and in fact, finds the close friendships she has made there in a short time as well as networking possibilities with alumanae are wonderful features of the college. I don't know whether your daughter had a chance to visit when classes were in session. If not, and since time is short, I would recommend she talk to any current students, preferably those from her high school. If she would like to talk to my daughter, I will check with her and forward you contact info.

Pmyen...thank you so much! This is why I love this place, because Smith parents have been just like you; helpful, honest, and willing to offer their D's up for assistance. My D applied ED II and will be hearing by the end of the month. Thanks again!

BMJ8,
Best wishes to your daughter on her application! All the best to you and your family in the New Year.

Happy new year to you and yours as well. My D visited twice, and both times was very impressed. Short story: My D applied ED to Amherst, got deferred. We visited Smith on a whim, not knowing what to expect, but it was in the area. It blew us away! She is into Bio and dance (ballet), so Smith is a great fit for her. Now, we wait and see about admission.

Don't spend too much energy waiting...practice writing the deposit check and have your D start thinking through her housing preferences. (Tastes great!)

TD...did you have to mention the deposit check!?!? Ugh! (less filling!)

{Don't spend too much energy waiting...practice writing the deposit check}

The deposit check is just a warm-up for the big one Tuition R&B
It’s easier if you have had a few martinis or any other beverage with a substantial alcohol content.

BJM, you don't have to say "Less filling!" unless your D has already decided on the Quad.

We're funding D's tuition/RB from enough different sources that no one check is too painful. Then there's my peculiar accounting method: I've allotted so much per escrow check towards college tuition for the past several years. The fund is in the red at the moment but there's a target number for dollars to "re-fill" the "account."

TD, oops, didn't realize less filling meant the quad thing! I gotta learn your lingo. I think the quad or elm st. seem to be of interest. We'll see!
