Early Decision at Smith

Hello... well, I've narrowed down my possible early decision list to three schools: Smith, Wellesley, and Barnard (yeah... I decided that I really like the idea of going to a women's college). I was wondering... what exactly is the ED admit rate at Smith? Thanks for any information :)

LL, for Fall 2004, 156/192 students were admitted to Smith under a combination of ED I and ED II.

The 2005 data won't be out until the know who actually enrolls in September.

Your odds are good.

I was recently contacted via PM by a parent whose D had Bryn Mawr #1 and Wellesley #2. They were blown away when they visited Smith.

Make sure you visit all three before applying ED, so that you are sure (although, as always, and putting aside the fact that these are all-women, good LACs generally have more similarities than differences.)

Or you could apply to all three RD, and see what falls out (from what I remember, you have little to worry about.)

Thanks for the data :) I'm planning to overnight at all three in the fall, and make my decision after that. TheDad... what exactly were they blown away by?

LL, it was a fairly short e-mail and, as they have not posted in public, I have no desire to "out" them. They spent most of a whole day at Smith, including info session and tour, and time in NoHo. The subject line of the e-mail was something like "When you're right, you're right," seemingly a reference to my role in the Smith Ministry of Propaganda. :)

Going for overnight visits is a great idea, each school has its own personality, academic, athletic, social and cultural strengths. Be absolutely sure of fit, don't be misguided by ED stats...these frequently include the alumni and staff relations components of school applications and so come out a higher percentage of acceptance in some schools. Don't apply ED because it will increase your chances, apply ED because it is The School for you. Best of luck.

I agree with Mr. B about not applying ED for increased odds of success but only if you are sure of "fit" and financial aid isn't a concern. Besides, LL, from what I recall of your profile, I don't think you're any problem at all for Smith.

While my D did apply to and was accepted by all three of your targets, they are very different from each other. In broad brushstroke, I'd say that Smith and Wellesley are more similar to each other than to Barnard, in that they have more campus-centered life. NYC itself seems to suck students off-campus from all the NYC schools...not unreasonably, since NYC has a lot of options. It's a different experience but one isn't any more right than the other, it just depends on what feels most comfortable to you.

I agree that your reactions to your overnights in the Fall may tell you a lot. My only caution would be not to let the chemistry with your particular hostess, in either direction, override a more comprehensive view of the school.

ladylazarus, did you by any chance come up with that name from Sylvia Plath's poem?

Yes, as a matter of fact :)
