I'm looking for winter music camps out there (preferably audition prepration ones), but I can't find any...

What are you looking for…something that is happening during a school vacation? I’m not sure there ARE that many “winter music camps”. Most faculty that work at these camps are otherwise occupied in the winter (as teachers somewhere else).

Perhaps there is something in Australia as winter here is their summer.

The only winter program I know of is the New York Strings program (or whatever it is called), where kids audition, practice and play concerts around the Christmas holiday in NYC (Jaime Laredo runs it/is the conductor), but that isn’t really a festival as such. There may be workshops during the holidays, or maybe weekend master classes, but I suspect as others have said, that the people who could teach it would be too busy working.

If you are specifically worried about auditions, there may be workshops offered on how to audition, but I doubt you will find anything to work on repertoire per se, it is more likely about skills.

If you’re looking for audition preparation, I would suggest you start with your private applied instructor. When DS was getting ready for auditions, we paid for some additional lessons with his private instrumental teacher that were specifically geared towards auditions. I will say …the teacher said that EVERYTHING DS was doing in lessons was preparing him for auditions.

Are you a member of a youth orchestra, or do you live near a precollege program. Some of the precollege programs have auditions as one topic they teach.

The program musicprnt refers to is The New York String Orchestra Seminar. It is a high level program, very competitive and is a 10 (ish day) event historically starting in mid December, and running through Christmas. Apps are typically out early to mid October. Cosmos was a participant a year or two back, my son was an alternate (waitlisted) but did not attend about five years ago.

It is not an audition training scenario . It’s populated by undergrads, there is an age limit (21?). This is the only program I know of that offers a winter semester break timing.

^^^^^

Careful!!

NYSOS auditions (not applications!) begin in October. The info is currently available on their website and you’d need to apply with prescreen now.

This is a very high level program. Violin section (and others I’m sure, but I don’t know names here) frequently includes prizewinners of international competitions.

Perlman runs a winter chamber music session in Sarasota that includes college age students. You can google for details - I’m lazy (unlike Violadad who is selfless!!). Again, very high level.

^^ Shellfish? You’re calling me a shellfish? :D

Anyway fiddlestix is right again about the app/audition timing on NYSOS. I do remember something happening in October. I was recalling from memory, as our experience goes back a few years. I’m lucky I can remember what day it is.

Again, take what you will as gospel from any informational post. Remember, trust but verify.

Mea culpa.

FYI - reviving this thread -
