I was wondering if there were any good music programs held over winter break. I have looked at the NYSOS, and was wondering if anyone knows about other programs like it.
Any additional info about NYSOS (how competitive it is, what kind of experience it provides) would be greatly appreciated too!
I have also heard about the Perlman Music Program Winter Residency in Sarasota. Is that open to high schoolers, and if so, how does one audition into it? The website doesn’t seem to have any information about applying to it. Any info on it would also be very appreciated.
My understanding is that the students who perform in the Perlman program’s winter residency are pulled from those who attend the summer program. So to be invited to the winter residency you must first attend the summer program. You can call them and ask. NYSOS is pretty competitive. The experience is a lot of fun-- you perform in Carnegie Hall twice during the holiday season.
Mine didn’t like missing Christmas away from home while attending NYSOS. Choose not to re-apply for a second year. Others happily return - individual differences, I guess. The program is a difficult admit - a handful of outstanding high schoolers each year, but mainly conservatory and college music school students. There is orchestra and chamber music with very fine “name” coaches, many associated with various conservatories. Many auditioners coming from all over since the program is free. Are you string or wind or percussion? Your teacher may be able to advise if you are at the appropriate level.
Any I’ve known that have gone to Perlman’s winter program have attended the summer one - just as glassharmonica says.
Yeah, it was the same with mine–missing a holiday at home, a rare time the family is all together–was hard.
Yes - and add to that missing the revenue from all the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gigs and seasonal Messiahs! I not sure it was all love of family that kept mine home!
Seriously for the OP, anyone accepted to NYSOS should consider it a real honor and accomplishment.
