Winter Olympics 2022

I see NBC begins their network Olympic coverage tonight with qualifying rounds for some events.

We watch a lot of Canadian Olympics coverage, since we are close enough to Canada that we have a couple channels in our cable package. That does help, but even they have stopped showing the variety they once aired. I really wanted to see more rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and other sports (like synchronized swimming) that were kind of ignored in the summer. Iā€™d rather see fewer heats in track if it means I could watch coverage of all the sports. I donā€™t need to see the ENTIRE marathon or long distance bike race, though! Like I said, Iā€™m getting curmudgeonly in my old age.

I generally agree, but the marathon in Tokyo was quite exciting to watch.

But could anything be more sad than the beginning of the Summer Olympics opening ceremony? When the athletes were practicing all alone, on edges of the stadium from each other? Man, that was so sad and powerful.

Was there an opening ceremony for China televised anywhere?

NBC said they are airing opening ceremonies Friday night.

I feel the same way. Itā€™s so annoying! And I hate how they show an event for like 5 mins and then cut to another event. Or one year, they just showed the American gymnasts and didnā€™t even show the girls from Russia and China. D and I like gymnastics, so we want to see gymnasts from all the countriesā€¦not just the Americans

Just read that Tara and Johnny will be doing the commentary for ice skating remotely from NBC studios in Stamford, CT!

NBC is doing all of itā€™s commentary from their studios in Stamford, CT. It may be the wave of the future , Iā€™m sure itā€™s saving NBC a bundle. They are calling things off the international feed.

It will be interesting to see if there is a major difference in content with the different feed.

My apologies to its fans, but I am NOT a curling fan. I find it totally unwatchable and unathletic. Iā€™m hoping I can avoid it on the tube as much as possible. If curling is much of the content on TV in this Olympics, then Iā€™ll be watching test patterns instead.

Gen Z poking in here will be scratching their heads, ā€œWhat is a test pattern?ā€

True, good point. How about tests of the Emergency Alert System instead then.

Mike Trico said that he is broadcasting from Beijing. But the vast majority of their commentators are in CT.

Iā€™m guessing Trico is on site to conduct interviews. His set could have been in CT, there was nothing that looked to the outside that I could see.

All the snow is man made. Really hard on the body.

Itā€™s really too bad. Itā€™s too expensive and too many hoops so itā€™s become that itā€™s hard to get places who want to host the Olympics.

Why canā€™t they be in places that get actual snow and winter. Instead of Sochi and Beijing

You could see the grass under the moguls as the event went on

Watching some figure skating coverage right now! The spectator stands are way emptier than the stands of Tokyo Games.

ETA: only 800 people are apparently in the audience. :scream:

Nathan Chen is BEAST MODE of figure skating. :sunglasses:

Actually went to the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics and saw a huge array of events plus opening and closing events. Will never forget itā€¦everā€¦

did you see the NBC coverage last night? The reporters are in the hotel and everyone who works there is in hazmat suits! And the bar is open but the bartender is a robot! Makes me wonder if our D21ā€™s college roommate (who is from China) will even go back this summer since who knows what the rules are for Chinese citizens coming and going.

I love the Olympics too. I donā€™t participate in any winter sports but Iā€™m still wowed by those skaters and skiers and think those luge competitors are crazy!
