I thought I'd mention it before people started posted on the board asking.

The Winter schedule is scheduled to be posted on 10/14/11. Please note: use this info only as a guideline, not law. There have been cases in the past where the schedule wasn't posted on the listed release date, but was posted a few days afterwards. This should just help you know when to start looking for it.

So if I am a Junior and my student number ends in 4, I register on Nov 11?

Do you think I will be safe to wait until 3pm PST to register? I will be on a plane from 6am PST to 5pm EST, then taking time to get to the hotel and settle in, so I won’t be able to log on before then. If it’s absolutely necessary to register at 5:55am, I will try to find a friend to help me. If not, I don’t want to put them through that, and I will do it myself later.

Oh, I have no idea. Don’t I need to wait until the schedule is up to decide?

I don’t find out if I get until Foster until Nov 10, so I’m going to make two schedules: one for if I get in, and one for if I don’t. I’m hoping to go for business classes, though. Any of the upper classes would be fine, since I haven’t taken any of them yet.

Just to remind people…the estimated day is today. I have seen it show up a few days after the scheduled date before. I’ve also seen it pop up in the afternoon (I have a gut feeling it’s whenever the person who handles it decides/has the free time to publish it…rather than it being an automated thing)

(although I hope it pops up sometime today too!)

Yeah, I’m having my dad register for me at 5:55.

And I’m planning on taking B CMU 301, MKTG 301 (since I’m a marketing major), and MGMT 300. That’s my primary schedule. I have backups, of course, though.

@ mandy: According to the Registrar’s website, it should be up on January 27.

Also, to everyone, I got the schedule I wanted! My dad woke up early to register for me. I only have class two days a week, and it lasts from 10:30-5:30 with a one and a half hour lunch break. The classes are all really close to each other; the two back-to-back classes are in the same building. Overall, it’s 12 credits. I might add something else later, but I’m satisfied for now. So, thanks to everyone for their advice in registering! I’m excited for winter quarter.

Since you have 12 credits and you can register for up to 19, I’d actually suggest you grab random classes that MIGHT be interesting and that you may want to take. You can drop them later at the beginning of the quarter without a penalty.

I dunno, I have mixed feelings about that advice, speedsolver

I think if a person is pretty interested in the other classes…and the odds are high that they are going to take them, yes sign up for the extra classes.

But if one were sign up for classes because they can because they find them interesting…but have no strong intention on taking the, I would highly recommend they do not sign up for the extra classes.

It’s not really fair to other people that may really want/need need that class…and cannot get into it because people are holding it until after classes start. At that point, they might have given up, and have signed up for another schedule that conflicts. Or has a job and has already committed those hours to work, where they otherwise would’ve taken the class had it been open before the first day of classes. At the very least, this would cause alot of last minute checking the schedule/running around for 1 person that otherwise would have otherwise been able to sign up for the class.

So i mean, if the extra classes only look like they are going to get 1/4 full or something, go for it. But if it’s a full class or looks like it’s going to be full…it’s best not to take it unless you intend on taking it, to be nice for others.

can you technical do this? yes
morally should you? maybe not.

That’s true, travelgirl. After reading over my post, I worded it pretty poorly.

TLDR+FIFM: Feel free to add courses to your schedule if they sound interesting and that you’d like to take. It opens up more options for you, unless you’re only planning on taking 12 credits.

I actually did this for a class during Spring registration (I was interested, it didn’t have a lot of information online, there were 2 spots left, I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it or not - maybe 50-50 chance, not really ‘strong’ at the moment) and I ended up keeping the class for this quarter. I’m really glad I did.

However, I wouldn’t just grab random classes that I have absolutely no intention of keeping (ie HSTAM, LSJ, etc); I’ll do it only if I was on the fence about it or wanted it to be my back up class in case I never got into another class but wanted to be around 15-16 credits.

All of my required CSE classes that I’m able to take next quarter were full several days before I registered for courses. I know there are some ‘hoarders’ there, some who register for 3 but only plan on taking 2 classes. I know there are people who aren’t sure which 2 of the 3 they’re taking yet, and I don’t blame them for grabbing all the classes and later dropping the one they aren’t going to take. They had an earlier registration date, and thus they have the ‘power’ to add classes to their schedule, take a deep breath, and think about exactly what they want next quarter. It’s a … “perk” of having more credits.

@ speedsolver: Thanks for the suggestion! The thing is, I really, really want to have a 4-day weekend every week. That’s why I’m sticking to 12 credits. I came down with a terminal illness before the year started, so it’s been difficult for me to keep up with my 15-credit schedule. More importantly, even if I take only 12 credits this quarter, I can still graduate on time, so I’m planning on giving myself a break next quarter with the hope that I can get my illness under control for subsequent quarters. However, I will double-check the schedule in case there is anything else I want to take. I would love to have a class on Tuesday, but unfortunately most of those classes are also on Thursday. So I’ll look into it, but as things are, I am planning on sticking to 12 credits.

Kayley: I am so sorry to hear about your situation, but you look like your handling it well. If you have the money for it, you should consider taking one of the classes online…you can work on it at your own schedule and can do it from anywhere.
