Winter Weather in Northampton?

Is it unbearable for foreign students who belong to warm countries?

I’m sure it’s an individual thing. Some adjust, and others hate it.

We have hot areas in the US, so even if warm-weather foreign students don’t see this, I’m sure that warm-weather US students might be able to add something.

It does get cold and can get snowy from mid november till mid february but the winters in New England are very unpredictable - it’s still less than half the college year though. Though not at Smith I know many foreign students who have come to MA from very warm - Iraq for instance- countries. It’s not easy at first but you get used to it and you buy the right clothes. I for one couldn’t imagine living some where where it is 100 degrees all the time though so take my advice with a grain of salt!

Smith is far from the coldest weather college in the U.S. It gets cold and it does snow, but in neither case is it extreme. My D used to resemble Napoleon retreating from Moscow any time the temperature dropped below 68F here at home and she adapted to Smith quite well though the cold could be just tedious by the time February rolled around.

It’s not too bad, in fact, it’s a little better than some places in New England because the Pioneer Valley shields us from the worst cold fronts. It rarely gets below 0 degrees Farenheit, winters tend to hover in the low 30s, though there are warmer days. Like overwhelmed said, the most annoying thing is that you can’t really tell how things are going to be from one day to the next.

As for snow, it’s very unpredictable. One year we didn’t get any snow from January to March, then on the first day of spring break it snowed two feet overnight. Sometimes you’ll get a big storm in november and then nothing until february or later. Sometimes there’s even snow in April when you think you’re done with winter. Other years, it’s warm and beautiful by early march and the snow is very mild. Really, really varies.

Best advice: don’t worry about the weather. You can’t control it, and when it happens, you just dress for it and hope it doesn’t last too long.

Thank you so much. I am really happy to see that all the ppl here are really very co-operative.
