is tufts campus wireless? I searched the forum, and I found out that in 2005, the campus was not wireless. Has anything changed since then?

Certain parts are.. Currently, I could get wireless from the Engineering Building, IR Building, and the library.

But yea, Tufts students are lobbying for campus-wide wireless access. Since adding a few routers isn't very expensive, I think we'll get it sooner than later.

Libraries are all completely wireless; as are certain academic buildings and common areas like the Quad, Campus Center, etc. I also actually believe Tufts has a wireless network on Davis Sq. but I've never even considered using my laptop outdoors while I'm waiting for the shuttle or anything... :)

All the places where you need wireless access are wireless, as far as I know.

So, in summary, the campus is not totally wireless. :(

Right. But where it's not yet wireless, there's high-speed DSL. So if the question meant to ask whether there's Internet access everywhere on campus, the answer is yes.

Does anyone know what type of wireless is used on the campus? Incoming freshmen have to decide if they should pay a bit more for 802.11n (vs. 802.11a, b or g) wireless cards when buying laptops. The 802.11n cards can be significantly faster (2x to 4x) but the campus needs to have wireless routers that support it. Knowing the brand would be nice also, as that'd insure compatibility.

Check the Tufts TCCS website or call them.

Tufts has wireless in most places, but not in dorms. The campus is not completely wireless, but high-speed lan outlets are pretty easy to find.

For most of the year, it's too cold for outdoor wireless to be much of an issue.

Also, the internet service at Tufts is much faster and more reliable than that at other schools.

Tufts can't technically say "we have a wireless campus" to their tours, but it's not like that really matters. You can get wireless in the place you would have your laptop, like the campus center and library. The only issue you may have is if you want to take your laptop out into your dorm lounge. But even in South Hall the main first floor lounge is wireless. Also, freshman year I bought one of those goddamn 50 ft ethernet cables so that I could have internet in my lounge, LOL.

Our common room in wireless, too (Hill Hall). I didn't know it was until I just went out and tried it one day. There isn't wireless in the rooms, but as people have mentioned you can use a cable for that without a problem.

Thanks Lollabelle, The web page http://uit.tufts.edu/?pid=413&c=354 says the campus has support for 802.11b/g. So I think that means it's probably not worth buying a 802.11n wireless card yet.

Wireless n will be built into the new Intel Santa Rosa chipset due out this May. So if you're buying a high-end laptop over the summer, you're going to get the card whether you like it or not. The campus currently uses wireless g, but as it transitions to a fully wireless campus, it'll use wireless n.

If anything, you could setup your own wireless n router in your room. Just make sure you password lock it and don't tell your RA about it.
