Internet and Laptops at Tufts

I was just curious about the computer usage at Tufts. I know most of the dorms do not have wireless internet access (the campus itself generally does, though, if I heard correctly). I assume that the connection in the actual dorm rooms is wired, right? I'd assume logging online in your room would be pretty important, so I wouldn't expect otherwise, but I'm simply curious. Also, can anyone tell me if they know if the connection speed is unbearably slow or the general quality of it? I know this is a very picky and random thing to ask, but I love Tufts, and I'm curious of what life will be like if I get accepted :) Anxiously awaiting.
Thanks everyone.

From what I have heard, more dorms are getting wifi and some can actually access it based on their proximity to other places. That being said, dorms do have wired access.

If you want wireless in your room, however, there is another way. My buddy got wireless and wireless printing in his room even though it didn’t have wifi. How? He used an airport express. It’s an apple product, but works with PC’s, obviously. What it does is it allows you to turn your ethernet connection or whatever into wifi (and you can make it private/the wifi is only for you to use).

Regardless, the internet is actually fast and there aren’t any “lags” with either the ethernet or wifi. Streaming things is also very fast, etc.

I hope that helps.

You’re right about there being wireless on campus - it’s pretty much everywhere. Some dorms have routers in them (I’m lucky enough to pick up wireless from the residence hall my dorm window faces), and some don’t have wireless at all, but all dorms have ethernet ports for a wired internet connection. The speed is usually pretty fast, but sometimes at night it’s painfully slow when everyone’s in their dorm or the library surfing the web. Overall, it’s pretty good.

“What it does is it allows you to turn your ethernet connection or whatever into wifi (and you can make it private/the wifi is only for you to use).”

That’s called using a wireless router, and it doesn’t have to be one made by Apple…
It’s also technically prohibited by UIT (although I’ve never heard of anyone getting in trouble for it).

But, to address the original topic, they’re in the process of adding wifi to more and more dorms, and every dorm still has wired access. When I lived on campus I never had any problem with internet speed; internet speeds in general on college campuses are typically faster than what you get from your cable company.
Also, a wired connection is faster than wifi.

When I was on my tour, the guide said that there are no forced triples at Tufts because every student is guaranteed an ethernet jack, and there would only be three jacks in a room if it was originally designed for three students. I thought that was – while perhaps slightly unrelated to your question – interesting and pretty heartening!

Unfortunately I think your tour guide is wrong. It happens very infrequently, and I don’t think there have been any the last three years, but a small number of the current senior class had forced triples as freshmen.
