Does anyone know if there is wireless internet and cable tv available in the dorm rooms?
Thanks

Wireless is available in most dorms, but it's not very strong and isn't too reliable -- it may get better next year, though, because of the change in data transfer policy. Cable TV is available for a monthly fee, but it's also free in the TV lounges, of which there are many to relax and watch television in.

My roommate bought an airport express (apple's router) for our room....much better than Red Rover (Cornell's wireless system). Just gotta encrypt the network so others don't log on and use your monthly network allowance :-)

thanks to both of you.

whats the change in data policy? Are the having the wireless count towards the crazy low monthly limit too?

If I understand the new policy correctly....data exchanges via Red Rover will also count toward the monthly limit.

What is the monthly limit?

The monthly limit is being raised to 10 GB starting next year (from 5 GB), though. So it's 10 GB through wired AND wireless connections. Much better deal, if you ask me, but a lot of people did torrents through wireless to get around the limit. Since I don't... It's good for me.

EW there is a usage limit at Cornell... Omg I thought I would be done with that after high school...

Honestly, guys, 10 gigs is a lot of porn for a month. I remember back in the day (3-4 years ago), the limit was only 2 GB.

is there a way to check how much you have left? is there a place i can go off campus where there is free wifi so I can download music and movies and stuff?

yeah....I was part of the 2GB limit...no fun. I think you can check your usage at nubb.cornell.edu

If you want to go off campus, you can go to Collegetown Bagels. They have wireless access and I believe it's free.

next year will be 10 gb, everything counted. there goes my free late at night wireless torrent downloading at mann library

I don't think DC++ activity counts against the limit....

it doesn't

I miss the DC++ days lol

??????im so confused?????? I'm definitely not a computer person. What does all this mean for an incoming freshmen. what do I need to buy/do to have internet?

It means as long as you don't download an obscene about of porn or copyrighted material, you won't even get halfway to the limit (your internet is free). If you must download copyrighted material, do it on DC++.

But the actual time you spend on the internet is not limited right?

No, the time isn't limited. For me a month of normal internet usage is around 2.3 GB with normal internet functions on at all times -- it's only if you download lots of stuff that you run into problems, and even then, the charges aren't that bad.
