wireless routers in dorms

I know Carman has no wifi, but can I connect a wireless router to the ethernet plug in?

you’re not supposed to bring your own wireless routers, but as long as you encrypt your network you won’t get in trouble (columbia only cares, and only catches you, if they consistently notice especially high traffic coming through a single port, which generally only happens if you leave your network open and other people connect to it and use your connection). i had a wireless router my entire time at columbia and never got in any trouble for it

Does furnald have wireless?

encrypting is just adding security by password, correct? and the worst thing that would happen if it were found would just be confiscation, i hope…haha

They don’t care about high traffic, you’ll just get your speeds limited if you exceed the threshold in a certain period of time.

If you’re illegally downloading a lot of stuff on bittorrent and someone complains and catches you, Columbia will cut off your network access and you will have to contact them to get it back along with any consequences.

what consequences? oh you mean… apologizing and saying your sorry 3 times before anything bad happens? :)

This is OT but I don’t want to make a seperate thread. How far is the dodge gym from john jay in walking distance?

It’s kind of diagonally across the campus, a little bit behind the Low steps…maybe 2 or 3 minute walk?

Actually more like 5 - 6 min…haha

Tons of people have routers. I easily downloaded >10gigs of random stuff throughout last year with no repercussions. That said, I do know several people who had their internet privileges suspended, but that isn’t as bad as it sounds. You simply have to tell them that you won’t download illegal things in the future.

My understanding is that some dorms are getting wifi. I think the renovated floors in McBain are getting wifi.

Also, do you guys know if we’re allowed to stay in our dorms during Thanksgiving break

and if we’re allowed to have friends outside of columbia sleep in our dorms??

I think we’re allowed to have up to 5 people checked in as guests in our dorms. Also there’s something about having to go to the security office in Low to get passes for them so we don’t have to sign them in everytime…

^^ true.

You can stay there over Thanksgiving. I am almost certain that you can stay for winter and spring break without a problem. It is a policy that helps international students.

winter/spring are allowed. having someone stay with you is kind of a pain 'cause of the sign in/out policies but other than that, it’s fine.

routers are also really useful if you download a ton of illegal stuff 'cause you can get around the CUIT block notice by changing your mac address.

you think a JJ single can fit 5 guests? hahaha but thats good to hear!
