Are there network police and do they do sweeps to remove any offending devices?

The only thing my son is aware of being prohibited by the university is file sharing. Also, they may reduce file size if you are taking up too much band width, resulting in garbled files. (Something about packets, which I'm not well versed on.) According to him, most students are wired in the dorm rooms since it's faster and more secure.

Don't believe so. They installed wireless in all the public areas of campus and you can actually connect wirelessly in some dorm rooms if you happen to be very fortuitously located. Presume you are talking about putting a wireless router in your dorm room. Pretty sure nobody has the resources to police that even if they had the desire.

all of tulane is one big wireless bubble, so theres no need to make a WAP for yourself

your MAC has to be registered with the school, i believe they send tech services people at the beginning of the year to do this

I thought that the school prohibited wireless networks in dorm rooms, although I have it from good sources that some students do it anyway. And, yes, the policing would be hard.

Do they limit how many pc's a student can have? Say leaving a desktop in the dorm room and having a laptop for moving around the campus? I'm just curious, my D is only going to have her notebook.

Hmmmm, I imagine an enterprising techie could set up a wireless-g mp3 server for their immediate area.
