Wisconsin vs Michigan

I was admitted to Wisconsin and deferred from Michigan. If I am admitted into Michigan, I’m definitely going to have some trouble choosing. I’m out of state for both and I’m studying chemistry. A lot more people attend Michigan than Wisconsin from my area, and for the reason I’m leaning towards Wisconsin but what are other pros and cons??

I think your considerations are cost, major/areas of interest and fit. One should not be where your friends are going. Michigan is large and you would meet new people from every walk of life. So, do the NPC at each school for cost and discuss with your parents what is affordable. On majors, both schools are strong across the board. But, WI is known a little more for hard sciences, but again good across the board. Michigan is ranked highly in virtually every discipline. Best known for Engineering, Business (but boy hard to fine any shortcoming elsewhere - everythings from Kines to Econ to math to sciences, languages, writing, etc.). Then for fit, try to visit both for a good day and a half if possible. that will help you.

Good luck - hope you have the choice to make.

Have you visited either school yet? I’d suggest you spend a day at both while classes are in session, and sit in on a class or two. Both schools have excellent programs in your field, so you should experience the campuses to see which fits you best. And visit in the winter. Both Ann Arbor and Madison have long, cold winters.

Both schools are very large shb5120. Don’t worry about running into too many of your high school chums at either place. I believe Chemistry is ranked a bit higher at Wisconsin, but the difference is not a big deal. Both are situated in excellent college towns. Wisconsin is a great school, so even if you don’t get into Michigan you are not going to be settling for mediocrity. Good luck!

They are both great schools, great college towns, great spirit. As an OOS parent myself, I do appreciate that UW is about $10k less per year than Michigan for OOS students.

You know why Michigan charges more than Wisconsin…because they can!
