Wisdom Teeth - extract now or wait?

My daughter has accepted her appointment to USNA class of 2012 and yesterday she had her Panorex x-rays taken for the Academy. She found out today that it would be in her best interest to have her wisdom teeth removed. Two of her wisdom teeth are most likely impacted. She currently is a senior in high school taking a full AP class schedule and is a key runner for the Varsity track team. Despite the x-ray results - my daughter is not currently experiencing any difficulty with her teeth. Should she have them removed now - or perhaps wait until Christmas break when her schedule would be free? Any thoughts? Has anyone had to have their wisdom teeth removed during the AC year at the Academy? Would delaying the extraction cause any problems on I-day?
Thanks!!!!

When does she graduate? Could she get it done after graduation and before I Day? My son is in same situation. He is having them pulled on Friday.

she can have them extracted after her last AP exam which is most likely 1-2 weeks before graduation.
she should definitely have them removed more than 2 weeks before I-Day.

My son was in the same situation where his teeth were all impacted, but not causing any problem at that point. We were told that if you wait a few years, it would be more difficult to remove because more of the roots would be grown in. So we had them removed in the summer about a week before band camp. It certainly made it hard, even a week later to play his trumpet, and he said it was the worst day of his life. There was a lot of bleeding and he was pretty miserable for at least 2 days. He couldn't be very active for at least a week.

Obviously, everyone is different, but I had mine removed and was running again in a day or two. The worst part for me was just the limited diet. I don't think she'll really feel like having the surgery and a very limited diet on her first long break from the Academy. And if she doesn't want to go through this on her last summer vacation before the Academy, I'd pick a Friday and chances would probably be decent that she'd be able to continue track on Monday.

Definitly get it done. My bro waited until he was at the academy and the waitlist was 6+ months long for sedation. He was already experiencing crowding so he opted to have them pulled using Novacaine and some pain medicine. This was also partly to avoid the hassel of having to deal with sedation at the academy. You have to have someone who is willing to stay with you the rest of the day (or at least until you are well enough) to make sure that you don't fall of your rack or something else bad like that. I got mine pulled on Tuesday afternoon, missed school Wednesday, and then ate a steak on Friday. I am sure it is differant for all though.

i got my appointment in january and decided to get mine knocked out in february. I was back running and working out in 2 days (got it out friday, fine saturday). I didn't take the prescribed lortab and I was never in much pain. who knows how ur daughter will be. I would just say get them pulled from what other people have said.

Both my boys had them pulled right after finals, well before I-day. About a month. 2-3 days to recover and start running again. They had impacted teeth and went to a specialist and did all 4 at the same time. Dr. echoed what has been previously said that as time goes by the roots grow longer and become harder and harder to extract. Boys got to recover at home with me around to help out and were able to resume PT couple days later.

Son has stated that some of his buddies that had it done at USNA and had a less re s t f u l recovery then he did having it done at home before he left.

Hope this helps.

She has an appointment with the Oral Surgeon this afternoon and we are going to schedule to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed as soon as he has an opening. Thanks for all the help!

Get them done before I-day! My daughter had a Plebe in her company that was pulled out of line on I-Day and sent downstairs for Wisdom Teeth Extraction. I guess the Dental Docs want something to do on I-Day too. He was MISERABLE for several days afterwards. ABSOLUTELY have it done before I-Day!

oHmom2010-
good decision!
Wish her well!
it will be one less thing to worry about once she gets to the academy, and while they take great care of their "own," there is still much to be said about recovering at home!

Best of luck, and congrats!

I really know nothing about wisdom teeth and I was wondering how you know if you should take them out at all? When I had the x-ray thing done I believe that they said they didn't look like they needed to come out anytime soon, but I'm not sure if that meant within the next four years or what... do you think that admissions will let me know if they think I should have them removed? I'd rather just do it now, but is there also a time when they haven't been exposed enough to take out? Sorry- these seem pretty specific, I guess I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a dentist out there...

PlebeWannaBe - In talking with the Oral Surgeon yesterday he said that close to 85% of all adults will need their wisdom teeth extracted at some point due to cysts, infections, root problems etc. With each passing year the roots of the wisdom teeth continue to grow and subsequently it becomes increasingly difficult to have them extracted. There is a greater risk for nerve damage and damage to the 2nd molars as well as a possibility for a shift in your bite. Sometime between the age of 16-19 is the best time to have your wisdom teeth removed as the roots are not fully grown, the extraction process is easier - and the recovery time is much quicker. In my daughter's case - she had x-rays taken right after her braces were removed in 9th grade and those x-rays didn't indicate a problem with her wisdom teeth. She just had a new panorex x-ray taken on Monday for the USNA dental requirement - and that x-ray showed severe impaction on her 2 bottom wisdom teeth as well as impaction on her top 2 wisdom teeth. The oral surgeon said she needed all 4 removed right away - and we had NO idea there was even a problem. She has her appointment scheduled for next Thursday.

thank you so much! I guess I'll be going into the dentist to have those suckers removed soon!

I just had mine taken out yesterday and it's really no big deal. I would definitely opt for sedation because I can't imagine sitting there for the whole procedure. The pain really isn't bad at all and the narcotic they give you really isn't necessary, but it is nice to take before you sleep.

Our oral surgeon has a tradition of taking pictures of patients w/ funny hats while they are under...he takes a polaroid, and gives the patients the pictures afterwards. He has hats for each season. I have one kid in Easter bunny ears and the other in a Christmas elf hat. Maybe you can find a fun surgeon like ours!

My son had his wisdom teeth out this morning and I just had a thought... Is this a procedure that needs to be reported to USNA or DODMERB (aside from sending the post-extraction panorex, that is)?

I just assumed all along that it was not necessary to report it, since they pretty much tell incoming plebes to get it done, but I thought I'd better ask the question.

Aside from sending in the updated panorex, your son can report it at the medical station on I-Day.

Thank you.
