I just got all four of my impacted wisdom teeth extracted yesterday. Holy hell does my mouth hurt! It is hard to chew, swallow, and sleep at the moment; and my cheeks are swollen like I have the mumps. I was scheduled to work today but I am definitely calling in. Ouch. :(

Anyway, I know wisdom teeth extraction is a necessary evil in adolescence, and probably a lot of you guys have already gone through it. Any advice on how to cope for the first few days (don't worry, I'm using my Vicodin prescription as needed)?

She had her teeth out on a Thursday a.m. Was back to normal on Tues. Don't rush anything. (BTW the swelling SLOWLY disappeared. She looked like a chubby cheeked toddler for a bit.)

I also got mine out yesterday. I look like the elephant man right now. Anyway, I took three pain killers and it doesn't hurt so I stopped taking those. I'm obviously taking penicillin and ate a ton of ice cream, jello, and apple sauce yesterday. As for ice packs, they didn't do a damn thing but make me cold.

Oh and I forgot to mention that you have to do the warm salt water rinse thing today. It's supposed to make swelling go down in the gums or something...

I had all 4 of mine out last Thursday, and it went a lot better than I expected. Little swelling, and it didn't hurt much. I have slowly reintroduced solid foods back into my diet. The stitches have stayed in surprisingly long, though.

I have to go for a consult on Sept 2nd. The dentist said the result of the visit will probably be, "Your wisdom teeth aren't causing any problems yet, but what the heck, lets take them out now."

Yay. Yeah, yeah, I know it should be done... But that doesn't mean I have to like it!

Honestly, it doesn't hurt. I didn't feel the IV and fell asleep in a few seconds after being given it and the gas. When I woke up, I thought the operation didn't even start yet. You don't feel a thing.

i must have had a good experience with the whole wisdom teeth extraction process then..i mean the typical side effects are basically lots of pain and swelling, but my cheeks only got a tiny bit swollen, you couldnt even really tell they were swollen..also, the pain wasnt that bad. sure i coulnt eat or smile very well, but my braces pain was much much worse..i only took 3 of the vicodin my doctor prescribed because the pain was that discrete. i guess i was one of the lucky ones? sorry to those who had a rough time with the wisdom teeth extractions..hope you feel better soon!

If you want something a little more solid than applesauce etc my daughter ate mashed potatoes. She just took advil and managed fine (she has a bad reaction to narcotics like hydrocodone & vicodin). She was zonked out on the couch for a couple of days then went to a concert on the 4th day.

Remember no straws. I am sure you were warned about the whole dry socket thin.

So when did you guys have your wisdom teeth taken out? When they grow out completely or only half out? I am just wondering.

Most of the time they're impacted, which means they can't get out of the gums and are causing other teeth trouble since they have no space. People often get x-rays and try to take them out before problems occur.

I was supposed to get mine out in February but it's been a wild goose chase trying to get all my records in order... I can't take medication that reduces swelling, though, so I'm gonna look like a chipmunk for a while :/

Well, I figured out why I have been in so much pain for this past week (by Thursday the Vicodin was no longer working): two dry sockets! Lovely, I know. The oral surgeon put in those medicine-soaked pieces of gauze and I'm feeling better already, but the taste is nauseating. :(

It sounds so scary!
I've been under general anesthetic before and I don't want to have it again. I was shaking for the rest of the day and I'm pretty sure it isn't healthy... plus... how do you know they won't give you too big of a dose? I know, paranoid.
Is it possible to do it under local anesthetic and have it not hurt?

I know...but the potential damage of being given the wrong dose is bigger than the damage from getting a tooth removed improperly. Besides, I said, I know it's a bit paranoid.

Also that time the anesthesiologist didn't take any weight measurements or anything. I think he just guesstimated.
