Have any of you had your wisdom teeth extracted? I have to get mine pulled out soon and I am concerned with the effects. Does the medicine the doctors give you alter your thinking method? The reason I ask is because I have to write around five essays this summer in addition to a few other assignments for a couple of classes and I want to make sure I won't be affected since I will probably be writing one of them during my "recovery." If it does, how long should I wait before I can start functioning/working properly? Thank you everyone!:)

Yes, I believe I had all 4 removed, back in the beginning of high school. They knock you out for the surgery, so you’re fairly groggy for 1-2 hours after they finish. I don’t recall the pain medication being too bad, the worst part is you can barely open your mouth, so you have to resort to drinking smoothies or carefully spooning in applesauce, lol. I remember just wanting to lay down and watch tv, so maybe it does alter your thinking a bit, but not to the point where you wouldn’t be capable of writing coherently.

I hope that helps.

you don’t even have to take the strong painkillers they give you like vicodin, you can just take ibuprofen or acitominophen

they gave me a big thing of vicoden but i took one and started to shiver and sweat and all that and it was just plain overkill, so i just took ibuprofen from then on

I had all 4 removed in December. After 2 days I was back to normal, except for my ability to eat some things. Most people are back within 3-4 and you can probably not write for a few days.
The pills were okay for me. Definitely not too much. I’m not much of a pill person. Generally, when I’m sick, and I get fairly frequent head aches, I go to sleep instead of taking medicine. Usually when I wake up I feel fine. I got Oxycodone, which is basically Vicodin and that killed most of the pain, but not all.

O ok, well a few days isn’t bad:) I was just worried because some of my friends needed a week to recover and they went to school and failed all of their tests:( Thank you everyone for your responses, they were all helpful and comforting:)

I had four removed. I was not put to sleep. The dentist only numbed the gums. The first two or three days were uncomfortable because of the stitches in my gums. Also, the bottom sockets did not close up immediately and became infected. This was fixed by putting some medicated gauze down into the gums. The surprising thing was that I had absolutely no swelling.

The one weird thing that happened: the surgery was over in the afternoon. Late at night I got the hiccups for several hours. I’ve had problems with hiccups ever since and that was at least 5 years ago.

I read on a message board that there are some people who do indeed get hiccups after surgery. It might be possible that those hiccups are a sign of something more dangerous, but in the message board one guy said after he had surgery he had random hiccups every day for 42 years, but no harm resulted at all.

I just got 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed Wednesday, after being put to sleep. It isn’t hell, but I have to sleep upright, eat mushy foods, and use ice for the first 2 days. There’s swelling, discoloration, bleeding…nothing life-and-death, though. You should recover after a week. At least I hope so, because I have to start my two summer jobs in a few days…
You’ll be fine.

All of your posts have been comforting, thank you!

When I had mine removed, I took the heavy painkillers for two days after the surgery, and then I switched to Tylenol or whatever. I do know that I was able to eat pretty much anything five days after the surgery. I had it done on a Friday, and I had no problem going to school on Monday.

Hell yeah it does…percs or hydro, or whatever opiate they decide to give you is gonna make for an awesome few days. But you can’t do anything school related for a weekend or so. The best part about getting your wisdom teeth removed is the medication ;)

I still have all 4 wisdom teeth intact. I’ve decided not to remove them because I’m not having any problem with them. I know that most people remove them, but do you guys think that it will be okay to keep all of the wisdom teeth?

If your dentist can’t find anything wrong with them then I think you will be fine, just make sure to watch them and if you have any problems have them removed promptly. Most people have problems with them but you may be one of those lucky few:)
