Please help me!!!
I'm having my wisdom out - all four - on Friday. They haven't come out now and I'm having no problems with them, but the dentist is worried that it might mess up what the braces did for me.
Anyone who has had this procedure done, can you tell me what to expect? I'm terrified right now from what I've heard.

i had my wisdom teeth removed. It's because they were sideways, and that may be the same reason they're doing it for you. If they ever did come in, it could mess up your mouth. I don't remember it too well, it was a good 5-6 years ago, but I remember coming out of it drugged, barely able to walk. When I got home I just laid in bed all day. My mouth was really sore, I could barely open it enough to spoon in some pudding! Your jaw gets stiff, and the ortho surgeon tells you to practice opening your mouth so you can fit 4 fingers, vertically, into your mouth. it was harder than it sounds!

So overall, it was a pain in the ass, but probably worth it. good luck!

I had mine removed 4 years ago. It wasn't that bad. I got home and washed out the blood from the procedure. Chilled for the day, the next day I woke up and my mouth was swollen, but didn't really hurt that much. After another day, the swelling went down and my mouth was back to normal. I had the procedure on a Friday and actually went back to my job Monday night. I only used the pain killers they gave me once (the next morning) and that was all. Other people I know had worse experiences, I guess it just depends on how complicated your specific case is. I think mine was pretty routine, so it wasn't bad.

i had mine pulled last tuesday. all 4, bottom 2 were impacted. had them out at 8:20 in the morning(IV deep sedation and a load procaine).

he was done at 9, home at 9:15 and went shopping for soup and stuff at 2.

i had very little swelling, but did have some pain. took the 10mg lorcets, and was fine(and happy).

went back to work the next day.

went back yesterday to have the stiches taken out. took all of 10 seconds.

overall, for me, it was nothing.

I got mine pulled last Wednesday of last week, it was fine really. The worst part was them putting the IV in (meaning, it wasn't that bad). They had me sedated with Valium and happy gas, and during the surgery you're literally on another planet, you just don't care. When they announced to me, two teeth out, two to go I was like "yippee! I get to sit here and enjoy myself". It was a really sleepy feeling and I was really far, far away. I heard the drill, I didn't feel a thing. Didn't see a thing. Didn't even know they had put Novocaine in my mouth until when I got home, and I prodded my lip and I was like whoa...I can't feel it. I had gauze in for an hour or two, after that it was fine. Kept taking my painkillers every four hours on schedule so I couldn't feel it; have your mom or whoever go get the prescription while you're in surgery so that when you get home you can just pop those puppies right in, before the Novocaine has a chance to dissipate. Otherwise it'll hurt a bit (not too bad, though). I had ice packs on my face the first day, then hot packs on after that. Your jaw will feel stiff, and it'll feel nice when you put the packs on (hot or cold). I stayed out of work the next day since the painkillers made me woozy and a little dizzy, and I'm a relatively inexperienced young driver (17). Got to watch a ton of movies and play video games, it was awesome :D According to this guy at my work, you feel it for about two weeks afterward; probably varies with the experience but yeah.

Expect to lose at least 5 pounds b/c of inability to eat much.

Make sure you ice them especially if they aren't rreally out yet. Otherwise you'll look like a chipmunk like Idid. I got knocked out, but I hear that if you just get laughing gas there isn't as much swelling. I don't know if that's true though.

The removal of my wisdom teeth was no big deal... cheeks were a bit swollen, but not much. It didn't hurt too much, and the pain only lasted a few days. I didn't need to use painkillers, even tylenol or advil. I was pretty much back to normal within 4 or 5 days.

Wow, I'm really glad this topic came up b/c I just found out I'm having my lower wisdom teeth out next Thurs. the day after July 4th (how fun). I've never had any cavities, so I'm kind of scared having anything done, but my mom said I'll be put out and no worries. How long are you really out of it? Will I be up to going to a movie the next night or will I be completely in pain?

I had my wisdom teeth pulled... I was out for like a week afterwards...

Tips:
1) GET LAUGHING GAS... it rules!
2) 1st Day - Get some cold, thick drinks (smoothies).
3) 2nd Day - Smoothies, malts, applesauce
4) 3rd Day - Add eggs, pancakes, and jello to your diet
5) 4th Day - Add Twinkies or a similar product
6) Download lots of movies and videos to watch... I watch Season 3 of House and 2 seasons of Scrubs ;)

I really appreciate all the responses to this. They all really helped. I'm on Day 6 right now in my recovery and feel pretty much normal.

I'm still paranoid about eating anything that requires chewing because of the dreaded dry sockets. When is it "safe" to eat a regular diet again?

At what age are you supposed to get them out? I'm 19 and I haven't got them out yet. I don't even know if I have to get them out.

You only need to get them out if they're impacted or if they're causing some other sort of problems. Most people get them out in the mid to late teens I think... I got mine out at 18.

Don get a anesthetic, thats the worst you can do. You are NEVER supposed to be put to sleep for dental work. It is really critical to your health and just makes the dentists job 100X harder.

There are more consequences than its worth.

also a tip,

take a teabag for each side of your mouth and bite down at the area of removal. Hold for about 5 min and the swelling and bleeding should stop.

My mom is a Dental Hygienist, and she and her boss(the dentist) would never let me go to sleep. Never, so just don't do it. Id take it my mom knows a few things.

I actually talked to my oral surgeon about that, and they said for wisdom tooth removal it is much easier on the patient and doctor to be put to sleep. I'm not doubting your mom's or boss's knowledge, this is just what I heard.

I was awake, only had local anesthesia (big, long needles! :() when I got all (two) of my wisdom teeth removed last year. (The anesthesia hurt more than anything >.<) It wasn't that bad.. kinda cool seeing the blood on my surgeon's hands... and hearing him cut apart one really badly impacted tooth out...

Be strong, guys! ^_^

I am 20 and still have not had them removed, but nothing's poking through or coming out, it seems. No pain, either.

Yeah I don't feel any pain either at the moment.

you might not have wisdom teeth. They don't form in everyone (can you say evolution?) ;)

Yeah, I'm really happy I only had two wisdom teeth (the two bottom ones). ^^
