With a bad writing score?

What are my chances with a bad writing score at somewhere like Carnegie Mellon University (the science, mathematics, or engineering schools)? I got a 35 composite on my latest ACT, but a 6 on the writing subscore - for a total English/Writing combined of a 29....does this kill my chances at top-flight engineering schools that look require the writing section? Or do they even look at it that much? Thanks!

I'm too lazy to do the math, so what were all your subscores on the ACT? did you take it multiple times?? Great score, I bet you have a great shot at Carnegie Mellon. A lot of schools require the writing but don't consider it in admissions decisions.

English: 34
Math: 35
Reading: 34
Science: 35

On my SAT (which they will be receiving also), I got a 590 on writing...still not what I want, but better than a 6 on the ACT I think. This was the second time I took it, the first time I got a 33 (and did not take the writing section).

I'm hoping that they only require the writing as a blanket requirement, and they don't really look at it that much - or at least they see my 34 on the english and reading sections and know that I'm fairly proficent with English.
