I am applying to Carnegie Mellon, which is a pretty tough school.
I got a 29 composite
29 English
34 Math
25 Reading
26 Science
And today I found out I got an 8 on the essay, making my English and Writing combined go to a 27.</p>
<p>Do you know if this will factor in with the decision?
I was just thinking, that the school's website highlights their ranges for the ACT composite score, ACT English score (I don't know if that is combined or not), and ACT Math score, so they care about those 3 more than reading, science, or combined English/Writing. But, I may be wrong.</p>

<p>Some schools do highlight certain scores more than others; English and Math are usually most highlighted along with the composite score. But that doesn’t mean they won’t still look at your other subscores.</p>

Science is a killer, and I got As in AP Chem and AP Environmental Science, I honestly don’t know how it’s consistently my lowest score.</p>
<p>Still waiting on the writing, myself, but even though I felt confident, it’s too much to expect anything over 11 since 9 is my highest… </p>

^Reading is somewhere in between. Not essential, but definitely expected that you’re literate if you want to go to college in the U.S. haha</p>

<p>Do you think that is a good assumption to make- that the scores that colleges highlight on their websites are the scores they are looking for?</p>
<p>Because if CMU cared about ACT writing to the same extent as just ACT English, they would put the median scores for both, but they only display the ACT English. Other colleges, like Stanford, displays the writing section on their website.</p>
<p>Usually, the composite is valued the most. You got over a 7 on the essay, so it probably won’t be the factor that gets you rejected. The composite is more important.</p>
<p>As for Carnegie Mellon, how would a 31 composite, (32 E, 33 M, 26 R, 34 S) with a 10 essay, making for 31 combined english/writing look? I definitely do not consider myself the strongest reader but I am at least capable of getting around a 30. My subscores were 17 for social studies/science and 10 for arts/lit… 97th percentile and 47th percentile… Its almost like I forgot to read one of the passages. Anyway, I see that CMU lists ranges for composite, english, and math only. What do you think someone reviewing my app would see, looking at those scores? Also do they see the subscores?</p>

I believe 31 composite is the average for CMU, but you are above the 50th percentile for ACT english and math according to the site. It depends on what college you are going to- Computer Science has harder standards than H&SS.</p>
