To Whom It May Concern:

It was the spring break before my senior year. I stepped out of the passenger seat of my mother’s car and felt the warm spring breeze surround me like the brine of freshly embalmed mummies. I was immediately enchanted by the magical palette of colors I call _____________; the gray hues of the cement buildings juxtaposed against the clear blue skies and the fresh green grass. I could feel the earth spinning on its axis, and slowly coming to a halt, to let me appreciate the beauty of ____. My mother smiled at me, and I knew we both shared the same thought, This could be the one. As I dreamily floated to the admissions office, I was flocked by a flurry of kind and gentle admissions officers; at __________, the admissions officers are as welcoming and inviting as the hearth at my grandfather’s cabin in Park City after a long day of skiing.

“We welcome you to __________________,” said a young woman in an ethereal voice. “I’ll be your tour guide for today.”

We visited nearly everything there was to see on campus, treading on each spot as firmly and yet still as gently as the breath of a seraphim. I walked into the library and felt like Belle, of Beauty and the Beast, and just wanted to throw myself into the shelves and shelves of books, intoxicating myself with the perfume that is the smell of antiqued books. I saw Leaves of Grass, lying on a table, looking terribly lonely, and I just wanted to sit down right there, right then, and read, “Song of Myself,” in its entirety. But the tour had to continue, and our next stop was the cafeteria.

Sir or madam, you could not believe the magnificent things I have to say about your delightful eating consortium! After the tour, my mother and I ate a quick lunch there, and allow me to tell you that I have never tasted such fine pizza except when I was in Italy! The sweet basil, the fresh plum tomatoes, the pillowy dough—it was both sensual yet strangely ascetic at the same time. And what, pray tell me, does ____________________ add to its soda fountain? Ambrosia? Your diet coke was the wine of the gods! As I inspected the color, I noticed that it was more amber than diet coke often is—and if there was saccharin in this diet coke, I certainly couldn’t taste it. But I digress—as I entered the cafeteria with my tour guide, I noticed the incredible diversity of the campus. I saw no black or white, but I did see a sublime rainbow, stretching from one end of the cafeteria to the other. I was, to say the least, impressed.

I could not say kinder things about ____________; the professors are wonderfully ripened with age, the students are as intelligent as they are colorful, the buildings are architectural masterpieces, and the campus could be a tourist attraction within itself! However, I have been accepted to Claremont McKenna College early decision, and must withdraw my application. We must accept what fate throws into our lives, but I will always have a piece of my heart in ____. Farewell ___________! Perhaps we will meet again, in another life.

My deepest love and compassion,
