Hello!

I submitted a withdrawal and received a direct deposit from my school, the refund. I'm wondering if I still need to pay back loans I made (Federal Subsidized Loan and Perkins Loan).

I checked my college account and it says I owe: direct deposit refund, meal plan, housing, late fee, health insurance (mandatory), and orientation fee - but nothing about the loans I made.

Do I not owe any loan money because (withdrawal->) taking away financial aid offer for this year, meaning no loans made? I hope so because I don't have any money to pay back those loans X: nor do I fulfill the loan requirements anymore (because I'm not a full-time student this year).

Sorry if this is a stupid question >____< I just wanted to make sure. Thank you!

You need to check with your school. When you completely withdraw during a semester you do sometimes have to repay any federal financial aid you received (loans, grants etc). It has to do with how much of the semester you completed before you withdrew. Your school will be able to tell you.

I am a bit confused by your post. You say you received a refund but then say you owe money on the account and that loans were not disbursed? Obviously if they were not disbursed you will not have to repay them. But what was the refund from?

About 20 days after I submitted all the withdrawal paperwork, I saw a deposit from the college noted as a “Refund”. Then about a week later (financial aid office and registrar were finally done calculating and processing withdrawal) I received an email saying my financial aid offer was revised. I checked my college account and it said I had a balance due.

I’ve tried calling and asking Financial Aid twice about the loans, but they were vague… and said I just had to pay what was on the account --then forwarded me to talk with the Billing/Accounts office.

Should I call again and ask if I owe any loans (perkins/ subsidized)? Also, if I will get considered for Cal Grant / other aid next year, when I apply for readmission?

Thank you so much!

Ask the Accounts Office for a full statement of your account. Didn’t you receive a fall bill before? Its seems like you could calculate, based on the original charges and FA awards, whether or not your loans had processed (they likely did if you were a residential student and received a refund). You could also check your loan balance on the direct loan servicing website (log in with your FAFSA PIN and SSN), but I don’t know if they will show Perkins loans or not:
[National Student Loan Data System for Students](http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/)

As sk8rmom says, you need to get a full statement of your account. It is really impossible for us to tell as we do not have the data. It sounds like maybe some of your aid was awarded then perhaps taken back because of your withdrawal. The school has to return aid to the govt when a student withdraws and has not “earned” the aid. It is a fairly complex formula where they take the number of days you were in school before withdrawing and compare it to the number of days in the semester to figure out how much of your aid you earned.

It sounds like you owe money to the school, perhaps because the aid was taken back or because they paid you a refund that you were not entitled to once you withdrew. Even if you withdraw you are expected to pay your outstanding expenses at the the school and repay any refund they gave you based on the expectation of you being eligible for the financial aid.

Get a statement from the school and figure out what you owe them and if you actually ended up with loans. You need to get that all sorted out so that you are eligible for aid in the future.
