It's only been 1 week ("welcome" week) and a day of class -- and on the second day of class, I canceled my housing contract and talked with my academic adviser. I was told I could apply for readmission by April--no essay required, just to fill out a bunch of forms.

Is readmission guarenteed? Or does priority go to the newer freshman?

I received a generous amount of grants and loans (perkins, subsidized.. I think those were it) as well as two outside scholarships.

I was told to contact financial aid by the end of this week to talk about how much money I'll receive back (it goes by percentages). Will I need to pay anything up front? >.< I don't have any money to do that.. (hence, generous offer).

I won't be going to school for a year (instead, taking winter community college courses to transfer for my major, working, taking up various sports, etc) before going back next year.

Why would you get any money back at all? All the funds you received were meant to help you pay for this semester and you are no longer attending. Doesn’t make sense that you would walk away with money after dropping out.

I just called the financial aid office and they said it would take them 30 minutes to calculate it, and up to 30 days for them to send me the letter about what I owe… T___T

Do they already know that I filed an academic withdrawal & canceled my housing contract [moved out, returned keys, didn’t attend any class] on that same day? I did all of that 9/249/29, so it’s 90%. Do I pay UCSC 10% out of my pocket? O.O

It was a personal emergency. If I stayed, it was a guaranteed failure of health (both physical and psychological) and in academics–my parents also believed it best I leave, even given the financial consequences…

I guess it’s a better idea to email financial aid about it directly. X:

While it might not make sense, it is true. Students begin “earning” their federal aid on the first day of class. If they withdraw completely, they earn money for every day they are enrolled. Until the 60% mark, complete withdrawals result in the return of federal funds using a complicated formula called Return of Title IV Funds. It’s surprising sometimes to see how much Pell grant students earn in a short period of time (although if they go to school elsewhere in the same term, they will not want to take the R2T4 funds because they won’t get Pell at the other school - can’t receive Pell funds at two schools in the same term).

Sorry, I worded it wrong! ^_^;
I thought I had to pay for the entire year even with my withdrawal for the school year - so that was why I asked about how much money I’ll “get” to pay for it. I understand now! I called Financial Aid office as well.

Re: next year…you will need to ask about financial aid as a transfer student. If you take courses at a community college second semester, you MIGHT be applying as a transfer student…not a first semester freshman. At some schools, first semester freshmen get better financial aid than transfers.

ONLY your school can answer your questions.

I tried calling again (registrar, financial aid office, and my academic adviser) and they were kind of vague.

Academic Adviser: Grades nor classes will show up on my transcript. I just need to print out appropriate forms for readmission and turn it in before April deadline.

Registrar: Says it’ll take 30 days for them to process the withdrawal request.

Financial Aid: Says it’ll take 30 days for them to calculate the financial aid, and will mail me.

I’m guessing Financial Aid is almost done because I checked my debit card account, and there’s a 5k deposit from UCSC as a refund. >.< So this is to pay back the loans for this quarter (subsidized, perkins) —I’m still just ‘guessing’. I need to wait for that mail. X:

Thanks everyone for the replies. And I’ll ask about the financial aid as a transfer student D: I’m not regarded as a freshman to the college anymore?
